- The UEFA Women’s Champions League Final between Wolfsburg and Lyon is on Sunday at 2:00 PM EST at the Anoeta Stadium in Spain
- If Lyon manage to win on Sunday, it would be a record seventh time lifting the heralded trophy, also making it a run of five consecutive wins in a row
- Currently, the favorites for the match are Lyon with a moneyline of +100
For the better part of the decade, the Lyon Women have dominated the women’s side of the Champions League. Consistently, they are framed as the perfect example of the growth of women’s football in Europe. As they go for their fifth, that’s right, fifth consecutive UCL victory, they are tasked with Wolfsburg in the final on Sunday, a team they are all too familiar with.
These two sides have met in the final an astounding three times. Wolfsburg came out on top in 2013 by a score of 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, while Lyon won in 2016 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time. Their last final battle also went to Lyon in an absolute classic that saw five extra-time goals see the Lyonaiss through 4-1. There is no doubt these two superstar sides will put on a show at the Anoeta Stadium come Sunday night.

Pernille Harder Could Make the Difference for Wolfsburg
As soccer fans, we know that finals make superstars, and superstars live for finals. Pernille Harder is that superstar for Wolfsburg, and her offense could help them overrun Lyon’s dominance over the past four years. The Danish forward scored four in the 9-1 quarterfinal against Glasgow, while Fridolina Rolfö was the difference-maker in a 1-0 semifinal against the Barcelona women.

Additionally, Wolfsburg has scorers all over the pitch. Their midfield alone scored ten goals in their six European matches, proving they do not just rely on Harder for the offense. History has proven Wolfsburg can stick it out with Lyon as well. The first two finals were within one goal, and if it were not for Alexandra Popp getting sent off in stoppage time, the 2018 final would have been close as well.

Will Lyon Complete Their Drive for Five?
The Lyon women are the definition of a great sports dynasty. Going for their fifth Champions League trophy in a row, also tossing in the fact they have won 14 straight Division 1 Feminine trophies in France is impeccable. However, they are still human and as we saw against PSG on Wednesday, they can get caught out at times.

Wendie Renard has put Lyon through to a fifth Women's Champions League final in a row.

Nevertheless, Wendie Renard’s leaping header was enough to see them over the Parisians. Renard skies through the air so often, comparable to a Virgil van Dijk or Sergio Ramos; she is truly a powerful center-half that Wolfsburg will have to keep two eyes on. Lyon has Ada Hegerberg, who is arguably one of, if not the best women’s football players on the planet. She won the inaugural Women’s Ballon d’Or and scores goals more consistently than Lyon wins titles.
However, she has been out for 2020 with a knee injury and will not be recovered in time for the final. Lyon will also be without their third-leading scorer from the regular season Nikita Parris who received a red card in the semifinals. Lyon still has plenty of firepower in their lineup though with the likes of Dzsenifer Marozsan and Eugenie Le Sommer, to name a couple.

Finally, the best bet for this match is the Lyon moneyline. Wolfsburg are a great side and will make for worthy competitors, but the success of this Lyon squad cannot be denied. They are an inspiration for women and soccer fans around the planet and will win their fifth consecutive victory in this one on Sunday.
My Pick: Lyon moneyline (+100)
