Barty’s Road to the Finals

Ashleigh Barty has made it to her tour leading sixth finals of the year, and if she were to win, she would tie Karolina Pliskova for a tour leading four trophies.

Barty was able to fight back to win her semifinal match against Pliskova, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. After a rocky start, losing the first set, and committing 16 unforced errors, Barty was able to sort out any problems and break through to take the last two sets with ease. Barty landed 77% of her first serves, which played a crucial part in the win. She minimized her unforced errors to just four in the second set, and was able to tighten up her game. Barty recorded 11 aces, to Pliskova’s one, with six of those 11 coming in the final set. She recorded 36 winners, while her opponent committed 30 unforced errors.

Svitolina’s Road to the Finals

Elina Svitolina is looking to become only the seventh player to defend a WTA Finals title. She is also looking for her first title since she won the WTA Finals last year.

Svitolina fought back to lead her semifinal match 5-7, 6-3, 4-1, before her opponent Belinda Bencic was forced to retire from the match with a cramp. Bencic was able to take the opening set, which was the first set Svitolina dropped all tournament. Bencic started off very strong, but when she called the medical timeout leading 6-5, she knew something was wrong. After that first set, Svitolina was able to take control of the match, saving break points and breaking Bencic to eventually put herself in position to return to the final. Svitolina committed just 20 unforced errors all match, and recorded 37 winners.

Head-To-Head

Over the course of five matches, Svitolina has yet to lose to Barty, and has only dropped two sets. Their most recent match came this season in the fourth round of Indian Wells, where Svitolina won 7-6(8), 5-7, 6-4.

Despite Svitolina’s dominance in this rivalry, their individual statistics all point to Barty taking this next match. Her winning percentage in 2019 in much higher, and she’s won three titles while her opponent has been held off the board.

Both players are healthy and if Barty can tighten up her game like she did in the semis, she has a great chance to finally defeat Svitolina and capture her fourth title of the season.

Best Bet: Ashleigh Barty -105
