  • Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev were amongst the best in 2019 so why are their odds to win a grand slam in 2020 so slim?
  • Andy Murray may have battled injuries all year long but he ended the year strong
  • Could either of these three players bring home at least one grand slam? Who amongst them is the most likely?

The 2019 tennis year was almost a passing of the torch, wasn’t it? Well, not exactly.

For the third straight year, no player outside of the big three of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal was able to win a grand slam. Once again the three best players who ever played the game have proven that they have the grand slam championships all to themselves.

With that being said, there were a few bright spots.

Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas have brought their games to new heights. While former grand slam winner Andy Murray could have a few tricks up his sleeve as well.

Even with the greatness that these players have shown, none of them are expected to bring home any grand slam hardware in 2020, but is this an accurate claim?

In terms of grand slam results, Tsitsipas had a pretty disappointing year.

He started off his year reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open. Along the way, he managed to beat Roberto Bautista Agut and most notably Roger Federer.

A non-competitive loss at the hands of Rafal Nadal saw his Australian Open run come to an end. Still, he made a ton of noise in his first slam of the year.

He wasn’t as successful in the French Open as he lost in the fourth round. The two remaining slams which were Wimbledon and the US Open were a nightmare for him. Back to back first-round losses are inexcusable for him.

Still, even with his struggles on the grand slam stage, Tsitsipas took home the Nitto ATP Finals. His route to the title included wins over Dominic Thiem, Roger Federer, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.

The question now becomes can Tsitsipas build on his late-season momentum to his first-ever grand slam title in 2020.

Prediction

Tsitsipas is a legit great player. One that will win multiple grand slam titles in the near future.

Unfortunately for him, 2020 won’t be his breakthrough year.

Best Bet: Zero (-325)

Daniil Medvedev had himself a year to remember in 2020.

Things started off well for him on the grand slam scene with a fourth-round loss at the hands of eventual winner Novak Djokovic.

He couldn’t keep up his good play at the French Open as he lost to Pierre-Hugues Hubert in the first round. Medvedev quickly bounced back with a decent run to the third round at Wimbledon.

The world-ranked number 5 player truly made a name for himself at the US Open. He dispatched of numerous opponents including Stan Wawrinka and Grigor Dimitrov on his way to playing Rafal Nadal in the final.

Nadal raced out to quick two-set lead. It should have been a straight-set win for Nadal. However, from there, Medvedev almost completed one of the greatest comebacks in history as he managed to bring the match to a fifth set before ultimately losing.

Medvedev ended the year winning four singles titles to go along with countless runs to the finals of several tournaments. His year didn’t end so great as he lost every match at the Nitto ATP Finals.

Even with a poor finish, Medvedev has proven in 2019 that he can not only compete but defeat some of the best out there.

Final Thoughts on Medvedev

Medvedev should have a grand slam in his possession already. All of the momentum was in his corner during the US Open but he just barely fell short.

Although I want to back him to win at least one grand slam in 2020, it just isn’t likely with Federer, Djokovic and Nadal still standing firmly in his way.

Best Bet: Zero (-275)

Everything seemed all but over for Andy Murray. He had gone through a lengthy battle with a hip injury and it looked as though he wasn’t going to be the same.

Following a first-round loss at the hands of Roberto Bautista Agut at the Australian Open, many thought they would never see him again due to injuries. Fast forward a few months later and Murray not only shocked everyone with his return but also with just how impressive he has looked.

Murray capped off his 2019 with the European Open title. To get his hands on said title, he defeated Stan Wawrinka along with a slew of other impressive names.

Although it might not have been a major title, it could propel him to one of his signature standout years in 2020.

Prediction for Murray

Out of every other prediction that was given, this one is the most difficult. With three grand slam titles to his name and the tag of former world number one, Murray is a great player. If Murray can stay healthy and back to his normal form, I fully expect him to hoist at least one grand slam title.

If he struggles with his fitness, however, then it will be impossible for him to do so.

The best thing for you to do with this one is to take a wait and see approach.
