The ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, also known as the Rotterdam Open, is the first ATP 500 event of the 2020 season.

The event will feature four of the world’s top-10 players in the ATP rankings. That list includes defending champion Gale Monfils.

However, none of the top four in the world – Novak Djokovic (#1), Rafael Nadal (#2), Roger Federer (#3) or Dominic Thiem (#4) – are entered in the event.

Sportsbooks are listing the highest-ranked player entered, #5 Danill Medvedev of Russia, as the +300 favorite to win the tournament. Medvedev has never reached the final in Rotterdam.

Two Steps Further for Medvedev?

Top-seeded Medvedev has inched one move closer to a title in each of his two years of competition in Rotterdam.

Last year, Medvedev was a semifinalist at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. He lost 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 to Monfils, the eventual champion.

In 2018, he lost in the quarterfinals 6-7 (4), 6-4, 3-6 to Italian Andreas Seppi. Medvedev made his debut in the tournament that year as a qualifier.

The Russian player is off to a 7-2 start to the 2020 season. Medvedev dropped one place to #5 in the world rankings following an upset loss to Stan Wawrinka in the Round of 16 at the Australian Open.

Tough Order to Fill for Monfils

Defending champion Monfils, ranked ninth in the ATP, has played in the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament twice in the past four years. Those were in fact his two previous appearances in the event. He’s reached the final eight in his last three Rotterdam tourneys.

He beat Wawrinka 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in the 2019 final. Three years earlier, Monfils dropped a 6–7 (1) , 6–3, 6–1  verdict to Martin Klizan in the final. In 2015, Monfils was a quarterfinalist.

He’ll come to Rotterdam off a finals appearance at Montpellier. However, history is not on the side of the French player.

The last player to reach successive ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament finals was Tomas Berdych in 2014-15.

Since it was originally launched in 1972, the event has been captured by the same player in back-to-back years just four times. The most recent repeat winner was Robin Soderling (2010-11).

No Success for Tsitsipas

World #6 Tsitsipas doesn’t hold happy memories of Rotterdam. The Greek star lost 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to Damir Džumhur in the first round of last year’s tournament.

ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament Champions

Year Player
2019 Gael Monfils
2018 Roger Federer
2017 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
2016 Martin Klizan
2015 Stan Wawrinka

Tsitsipas lost a qualifier to Klizan in 2018. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took him out 6-4, 7-6 (2) in the opening round of the 2017 event.

ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament Value Bets

With so many of the world’s top player giving this event a pass, it seems to be a wise time to take a deeper dive down the odds board in search of some value.

Russia’s Andrey Rublev (+800) is 11-1 so far this season. His only setback was a loss to Alexander Zverev in the Round of 16 at the Australian Open. The world #15 shows wins already this season in Auckland and Doha.

World #23 Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria (+2000) generally gives a good accounting of himself in Rotterdam. He lost in the 2018 final, and reached the quarterfinals in 2017. Likewise, Belgium’s David Goffin (+750) was a finalist in 2017 and a semifinalist in 2018. But the ATP’s #10 player exited last year via a first-round loss.

Several of the ATP’s NextGen talent pool will also be on display. They include NextGen ATP Finals champions Jannik Sinner (+2000) and Canadians Denis Shapolalov (+2000) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (+5000).

However, Goffin and Tsitsipas are the only players in the field who’ve defeated Medvedev since last July. If he doesn’t beat himself, this is Medvedev’s tournament to win.

Pick: Daniil Medvedev (+300)
