Fritz Makes History Against Tsitsipas

Not only did Fritz upend second-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals, he beat the world’s #3 player for the first time in four matches. And he did so impressively, winning 6-2, 6-4 in straight sets over the two-time defending Monte Carlo champion.

Fritz served three aces and won four of five break points. He held a 21-11 edge in receiving points won. Fritz also took advantage of 18 unforced errors committed by Tsitsipas. He won 70% of points (14 of 20) on his second serve and hit 17 winners.

He’s seeking his second ATP Masters 1000 title of the season. Fritz already was a winner at Indian Wells.

Rublev Holds Off Rally By Struff

Rublev’s quarterfinal match against qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff was also in straight sets, but the two sets couldn’t have turned out more differently in terms of his manner of victory.

The #5 seed cruised to a 6-1 rout in the opening set. Rublev hammered nine winners. In the second set, Stuff came at Rublev with a more aggressive approach, attacking the net effectively. In a back and forth set, the Russian broke Struff to go up 4-3, only to have Struff break him back to lead 5-4. Ultimately they required a tiebreaker to settle the match.
