At a WTA tournament, having a player ranked No. 12 face a player ranked No. 30 in the final probably isn’t the optimal outcome.
But both Anett Kontaveit and Maria Sakkari more than earned their way to Sunday.
Kontaveit, 25, is looking for her third career title. Sakkari, 26, seeks her second and first since 2019.

Sakkari Upsets No. 1 Swiatek in Straight Sets
Just as she did in their quarterfinal match at the French Open last June, Sakkari took care of the higher-ranked Iga Swiatek in Saturday’s semifinal.
And she did it in straight sets, again, 6-4, 7-5.

Swiatek is a better frontrunner than she is a comeback artist. But Sakkari never really let her in. The court suited her better, and the matchup – tennis-wise – definitely suits her better.
The Polish world No. 6 did well on her own serve in the first set. But she still lost it; she didn’t manage a single break point on Sakkari’s serve. Those numbers dropped a little in the second set. And that was enough for Sakkari to never lose belief.
Kontaveit’s Roll Continues vs Kvitova
Of the two, Kontaveit’s upset win over No. 2 seed Petra Kvitova was the more impressive.
The two have had some excellent battles over the years. But Kvitova came into Saturday with a 5-2 career head-to-head against the Estonian.

Unfortunately, the Czech lefty has had a few too many matches like this in 2021. She won just 11 points in taking the dreaded bagel in the first set – the first time in five years she’s lost a first set 6-0.
The second was a little closer. But Kontaveit was too steady in the 6-0, 6-4 victory.

Sakkari In Charge of the Head-to-Head
Sakkari is only five months older than Kontaveit. But she’s been much more of a late bloomer in terms of her rise to the top of the game.
Still, she has mostly had her way with the Estonian, winning five of their last seven encounters and 6-of-10 overall.
Maria Sakkari snaps a nine-match semifinal losing streak, defeating Iga Swiatek 6-4, 7-5 for her 7th Top-10 victory over the season.

Notably, those two recent losses by Sakkari came just before major tournaments. The last one – the Grampians Trophy, had a truncated match tiebreak format because it was running late, just days before this year’s Australian Open.
The Greek player does most things just a little better than the Estonian overall.

Kontaveit Not a Great Finals Performer
This is Sakkari’s first WTA Tour final since 2019, when she won a small clay-court event in Rabat, Morocco. The previous year, she was a finalist in San Jose.
Kontaveit’s road has been quite different. This is her fourth final in 2021 alone.
In 2017, she reached another three and also got to finals day at least once every season in between.
The problem is that out of nine previous finals, Kontaveit has won only two. One came on the US hard courts this summer.
But she lost on grass to Jelena Ostapenko at Eastbourne.

A won-loss record of 2-7 in finals is poor. And the fact that Sakkari has ended her streak of losses in semifinals is just another reason to give her the edge, despite the close odds.
A good prop is less than 12 games for Kontaveit (-105). If you’re less convinced she can take it in straight sets, Sakkari to win the first set (and the match) is at +130.
Best Bet: Sakkari in two sets (+190)
