Federer’s Road to the Semifinals
Federer returns to the Swiss Open semifinals with ease after taking his first two matches in straight sets, and his opponent, Stanislas Wawrinka retiring from their quarterfinal match due to back issues. With his three wins this year, he has won his 23rd match in a row. He defeated Radu Albot 6-0, 6-3 in just one hour and three minutes.

This will be Federer’s 16th semifinals, and has only failed to reach the finals once. He is currently on a 12-match winning streak in the Swiss Open semifinals. The Swiss was expected to see his toughest opponent yet in the quarterfinals, but after Wawrinka withdrew, his match against Tsitsipas will most likely be his most difficult match. Just earlier this year, Tsitsipas stunned the tennis world by upsetting Federer at the Australian Open.
Tsitsipas’s Road to the Semifinals
Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently playing some of the best tennis of his career, and his quarterfinal match was no different. Tsitsipas defeated his opponent, Filip Krajinovic, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. The Greek has won the last 10 of his 12 matches, including a win against Novak Djokovic.

Tsitsipas didn’t come out to a great start, but adjusting in the second set, Tsitsipas was able to force errors from Krajinovic. Tsitsipas was able to break his opponent at 1-1 in the second set, and was able to hold on to the lead. Stefanos Tsitsipas was able to overcome any sort of fatigue that Filip Krajinovic clearly wasn’t able to. Tsitsipas beat his opponent in an hour and 53 minutes.
This won’t be the first time Roger Federer and Stefanos Tsitsipas have seen eachother in their careers, and it’s not the first time this year. Tsitsipas upset Federer is a match for the ages at the Australian Open winning, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6 in a match that almost lasted four hours. Federer was able to gain some revenge in Dubai, where he beat the 21-year in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Head-to-Head
1 | Wins | 1 |
3 | Ranking | 7 |
38 (8/8/1981) | Age | 21 (8/12/1998) |
Head-to-head, it looks like the match could go either way.
Best Bet
Federer’s history at the Swiss Open is a widely known fact, but Stefanos Tsitsipas has the opportunity to continue his own success. Federer hasn’t had the healthiest season, and has had some tough loses. But being back at home, in front of a home crowd, he hasn’t missed a beat. It’s expected for Federer to win, and there’s no reason to think he won’t.
Yes, Tsitsipas has beat him, but it wasn’t a easy feat for the Greek. And Federer came back not that long after and took the match in straight sets. He’s the favorite going into the match with -450 odds over Tsitsipas’ +330 odds. It’s probably going to be a closer match than the odds attest to, but expect Federer to go to the finals of the tournament and possibly win his record setting 10th title.
Pick: Federer (-450)
