Krejcikova is coming off a dominating straight set win over Caroline Garcia, while Kontaveit defeated Ons Jabeur when Jabeur withdrew from the match in the second set, resulting in a walkover. Both players have had a strong week so far in Sydney, neither having dropped a set.

Kontaveit is entering the match as the slight favorite at -185, but both players have their work set out for them, as they look to book a spot in the finals.

Krejcikova’s Road to the Semifinals

As the third seed, Krejcikova received a bye in the first round. So heading into the semifinals of this tournament, she has two complete matches under her belt. But those two matches have been strong showings, and she’ll be heading into this semifinal with confidence and momentum.

The 26-year old opened her tournament up against Jaqueline Cristian, where she won 6-1, 7-5. And in her most recent match, she defeated Garcia 6-0, 6-2 in just over an hour.

Krejcikova started her quarterfinal match off strong when she won the first set 6-0. She then jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second, and was able to fend off her opponent, and only allow her to win a total of two games in the match.

In her Sydney singles debut, Krejcikova has now dropped just a total of eight games on route to the semifinal. Kontaveit will be a tough opponent for the Frenchwoman, her toughest of the tournament. But it should be a great match regardless.

The Favorite

26-year old Kontaveit started off strong against her quarterfinal opponent, Jabeur. She won the first set, after going up 6-4, but after about an hour on the court, Jabeur called for a medical timeout. The two started the second set, but not long after, Jabeur called for the match to end, retiring due to a lower back injury.

Kontaveit finally got her first tour-level win over Jabeur, but whether or not she looks at it as a win going forward is her decision. She’s had trouble against the Tunisian in the past, with the 27-year old beating her twice last year, in straight sets.

Looking forward, Kontaveit does have her eyes set on making her fourth straight final. This dates back to the Kremlin Cup in October, where she went on to win the title.

Krejcikova will be a tough opponent for Kontaveit, but she’ll be looking to channel her play from a few months ago, when she defeated the Czech player in Guadalajara.

Head-to-Head

This will be the third meeting between Krejcikova and Kontaveit. Both of their previous meetings happened in 2021, with both of them happening in the group stage of the WTA Finals in November.

Kontaveit won both of those matches, with Krejcikova winning just one set total.

Best Bet

Based on previous matches between these two, it does seem that Kontaveit has the upperhand to win the match. With her 2-0 head-to-head record against the Czech, it seems that Krejcikova has yet to figure Kontaveit out.

But both players are playing strong tennis this week, that the match could go either way. The stats show that both players’ serves have been fairly similar. Nothing overpowering. A few aces every match, and a decent serve percentage. Overall, their style of play is quite similar.

This match could lend itself to the mental part of the game. Krejcikova will be looking to avenge the two previous losses from last year, and Kontaveit will have to focus in after having a little less play heading into the semifinals after her quarterfinal walkover.

Regardless of the winner here, look for the match to go the distance.
