Alcaraz Continues Roll vs Khachanov

As he awaits his fifth match at the expanded-draw Madrid Open, Alcaraz still has only lost one set.

It was the first set of his first match, against Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori. Since then, through quality competition like Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev, he hasn’t looked back.

His 6-4, 7-5 win over an in-form Karen Khachanov was an example of how, when down, Alcaraz just raised his level – significantly. In the end, a second-serve success rate of 43 percent perhaps the only thing that could be improved.

But he saved four of the five break-point chances against him.

Coric a Surprise Semi-Finalist

Coric, now 26, has been in the Madrid Open semifinals before.

He was a lucky loser back in 2017, at age 20, and lost to Dominic Thiem. But the last two years, he’s lost in the first round.

This year, as the No. 17 seed, he stealthily snuck into the final four.

Granted, he’s had some good draws – his opener was against French wild card Hugo Gaston. And his quarterfinal win Wednesday was over lucky loser Daniel Altmaier.

But sandwiched between those were wins over the very tough Hubert Hurkacz. And in the third round, he battled the home crowd and a very game Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, to win in a third-set tiebreak after nearly 3 1/2 hours of hard work.

Still, only one of his opponents was in the top 30. And the highest-ranked was Hurkacz, at No. 15. So in a Masters 1000, that is called seizing the moment.

First Meeting Between Alcaraz and Coric

If the cliché is true that the underdog has nothing to lose, Coric is the epitome of it because the Alcaraz vs Coric odds are so strongly against him.

Still, as he makes his way back to the upper echelons of the game, he’ll have bigger ambitions than just having fun. Beating Alcaraz would send a message to the field.

And the opportunity to reach a Masters 1000 final also is something to lose.

Coric has made two previous finals at this level – in Shanghai in 2018, he upset Roger Federer in the semis before losing to Novak Djokovic.

In Cincinnati last summer, he upset Rafael Nadal before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.

Alcaraz isn’t a “Big 3” player. But his odds in this match are very “Big 3-like”.

Alcaraz vs Coric Prediction

The fact that Coric has never played Alcaraz will definitely be a disadvantage for him.

A lot of players who haven’t yet faced him think they know what’s coming. But when they come off the court, they’re sort of shaking their heads and saying, “I just couldn’t find a way through him.”

Offence? Alcaraz has it. Big serve? Check. Blinding speed? Yup. Eager and effective defence? Also that.

It’s a tall order. But if Coric has little shot at pulling off the upset, you can certainly give him a shot at covering the game spread.

Best Bet: Coric +4.5 Games (+120)
