  • Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is an overwhelming -2000 odds-on favorite over Dan Evans in their ATP Barcelona Open semifinal on Saturday, April 21
  • Top-seeded Alcaraz hasn’t dropped a set in reaching the tournament final four
  • Evans, the #12 seed, has already toppled two seeded opponents

Facing Dan Evans in the semifinals, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz is looking to take another step toward keeping the traditions continuing at the ATP Barcelona Open.

Top-seeded Alcaraz is the reigning tournament champion, so right away he’ll be seeking to maintain his reign. Secondly, a victory by him in this event would continue the long-standing dominance by Spanish players in this ATP 500 event. Competitors from Spain have captured the title in 17 of the past 21 Barcelona Opens.

The odds are strongly in favor of the Spaniard reaching the final. He’s the odds-on -2000 pick to defeat Evans in the semifinals.

Alcaraz Yet To Drop A Set

Going back to last year’s 6-3, 6-2 final win over fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, Alcaraz has played four successive matches in Barcelona without dropping a set. To suggest it’s been an easy ride would be an incorrect statement.

He took out another fellow Spaniard in the quarterfinals, battling past #10 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6(7-5), 6-4. Alcaraz won just 58% of his first-service points during the match.

His Round of 16 triumph over yet another Spaniard, #13 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, saw Alcaraz win 6-3, 7-5. Alcaraz is 9-1 this season when facing Spanish opposition.

A 6-3, 6-1 victory against unseeded Nuno Borges of Portugal in their opening-round match has really proven to be Alcaraz’s one routine advancement thus far in Barcelona.

Evans Battles Back For Big Win

Veteran Brit Evans battled back for a big win over #15 seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina. The 12th-seeded Evans dropped the first set 2-6 before rallying to take the next two sets 7-5, 6-3 to win the match.

Evans won 76% of his first-service points and delivered three aces. The English player also beat Cerundolo on clay in the opening-round of the 2022 French Open, winning 7-6(7-3), 6-4, 6-4.

He toppled #6 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 16. World #26 Evans downed Italian qualifier Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-3 in opening-round action.

Evans vs Alcaraz Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2021 Vienna (R32) Outdoor Hard 6-4, 6-3 Alcaraz

Coming into this tournament, Evans was a dismal 2-8 in his previous 10 matches. He was a semifinalist earlier this month in an ATP 250 event at Marrakech. Evans lost to a Spanish player in that match. Roberto Carballes Baena was a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 winner over Evans.

Evans vs Alcaraz Prediction

World #2 Alcaraz is 9-1 in his last 10 matches at the Barcelona Open. He’s looking to become the first repeat champion in the event since Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal won three in a row from 2016-18.

Alcaraz won easily over Evans in their only previous meeting in straight sets.  But that was at Vienna on a hard-court surface.

Traditionally, Evans isn’t a strong clay court player. Even with his three victories at Barcelona, he’s only 19-28 overall on the surface during his career. Overall, he’s an underwhelming 8-11 this season, compared to 21-2 for Alcaraz.

Both players are quite agile on the clay surface, where quickness matters. However, the 5-9 Evans simply can’t match the power game of his 6-1 Spanish opponent. Alcaraz in straight sets and at -6.5 games is the only play to make here.

Alcaraz vs Evans Pick: Alcaraz -6.5 (-105); Alcaraz 2-0 (-420).
