With 16 seeded players and a number of dangerous floaters, it’s a good outcome for the Charleston Open that the top four seeds have made it to the final eight. In fact, seven of the eight quarterfinalists are seeded No. 12 or better.

Pegula vs Badosa Prediction

Pegula, the current No. 3, has never had a completed match against Badosa – the current No. 33 who less than a year ago was at her career high No. 2. So there’s not much to go on.

The American managed to get through a roller-coaster of a win over No. 15 seed Irina-Camelia Begu on Thursday, but has to be feeling the effects of her double duty during the Miami Open and the the travel and the instantaneous surface switch.

Pegula made the semifinals in singles in Miami; she also won the doubles with Coco Gauff Sunday.

She was up 7-5, 4-0 against Begu. And then she lost eight straight games to go down 0-4 in the third set. And then she won six straight to take the match. She must be on fumes, and despite her obvious fighting spirit, it’s a great opportunity for Badosa to kickstart her return to the top as the spring clay-court season dawns.

At No. 33, Badosa’s ranking is as low as it’s been since June 2021. The confidence has disappeared and the more she has lost, the tougher it has gotten for her.

But had Badosa not run into Indian Wells champion and Miami finalist Elena Rybakina at both events, she might have made a better run. Badosa hasn’t lost to anyone outside the top 15 this season; her diminished fortunes and lower seedings made that happen earlier in the tournaments.

It smells like an upset – a launching pad for the Spaniard (Badosa in three sets has +350 odds).

Kalinskaya vs Jabeur Prediction

For Kalinskaya, Friday’s Charleston Open quarterfinal is the first clay-court quarterfinal at the WTA level in her career.

For Jabeur, Charleston and its Har-Tru surface (a bit like red clay, but also not like red clay) are almost home turf.

The Tunisian made the final there a year ago. In 2021, when back-to-back tournaments were held (a 500 and then a 250), Jabeur made the semis of the 500 and the final of the 250.

She is fairly keen to hold up the big trophy there. And after missing some time after the Australian Open with what appears to have been a bit of clearnup on her right knee, she just now rounding into form.

As good a week as Kalinskaya has had, Jabeur is a master of the natural surfaces who can disrupt Kalinskaya’s rhythm in a number of different ways.

Bencic vs Alexandrova Prediction

These two have the most extensive head-to-head of all the quarterfinal matchups. They’re 3-3 against each other.

Two of Alexandrova’s wins came on grass, and the third came just two weeks ago in Miami on a quick hard court. That makes sense; as Alexandrova is a big hitter who thrives most on the quicker surfaces.

This is different. This is defending Charleston champion Bencic’s territory. Having already dropped out of the top 10 Monday by not defending all of her Miami points, can’t get back in this week no matter what she does. But she’ll want to defend her title and stay within shouting distance.
