The tennis world has been waiting for a breakthrough from Cori “Coco” Gauff in a Grand Slam tournament since she reached the fourth round at Wimbledon two years ago at the age of 15. To a lesser extent, the same could be said of Barbora Krejčíková.

By tomorrow afteroon, one of them will be through to the French Open women’s singles semifinals. Oddsmakers believe that someone will be Gauff, though it’s worth noting that the betting line isn’t overwhelmingly in her favor.

Gauff is the -120 betting choice to win this match. A play on Krejčíková will come at odds of -105.

Krejčíková a Triple Threat

Krejčíková first earned her reputation on the doubles court, where she was once ranked #1 in the WTA. She’s won women’s doubles Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and in the French Open paired with Katerina Siniakova.

This year at Roland Garros, the Czech player is through to the quarterfinals in women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. If that busy schedule is hampering her game in any manner, it isn’t showing up on the court.

Krejčíková put on a tactical display of clay-court mastery in dispatching American Sloane Stephens. Krejčíková downed the 2017 US Open champion 6-2, 6-0 in just 67 minutes to reach her first Grand Slam singles quarterfinal. Krejčíková won 82% of her first serve points. She saved all three break points she found herself facing during the match.

Krejčíková credits the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown of tournament tennis for the upswing in her singles game. With no matches to play, she found herself involved in exhibition series against the other Czech players. Four players from the Czech Republic are ranked among the WTA’s top 21.

Currently ranked #33, until this year, Krejčíková had never cracked the top 100 in the world in singles. During the 2021 season, she has scored her first career top-10 wins, beating Sofia Kenin and Elina Svitolina. Krejčíková reached her first WTA 1000 final, earning her first career title a week ago in Strasbourg.

Gauff Makes Short Work of Jabeur

The 2018 French Open junior women’s singles champion, Gauff required only 53 minutes to move past Ons Jabeur. She beat the 25th-seeded Jabeur – also a former French Open junior champ – 6-3, 6-1.

At 17 years, 86 days of age, Gauff is the youngest player to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Nicole Vaidisova, 15, was a 2006 French Open quarterfinalist. The youngest player among the world’s top 100, #25 Gauff hasn’t dropped a set this year at Roland Garros.

Against Jabeur, Gauff won 81% of her first-service points. She also captured two out of every three points on Jabeur’s second serve.

This was the third straight year that Gauff reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam event. She lost fourth-round matches at Wimbledon (2019) and the Australian Open (2020). Both times, it was the eventual champion who beat Gauff in the quarterfinals – Simona Halep at Wimbledon and Sofia Kenin in Melbourne.

Coco Beware

The tennis public and certainly the American media may be viewing this match as the latest step in Gauff becoming the sport’s next big star. Krejčíková will be taking the court with a completely different outcome in mind.

Both players arrived to Roland Garros off tournament wins – Gauff at Parma and Krejčíková in Strasbourg. With five Grand Slam doubles titles, Krejčíková also holds much more experience at this stage of competition.
