Unseeded Danka Kovinic will take on 12th seed Ons Jabeur in the first semifinal at the WTA Volvo Car Open on Saturday, April 10th. They are set to take the court at 1 PM ET.
Kovinic has already upset two seeded players this tournament including No. 3 seed and World No. 11 Petra Kvitova in the Round of 16. Jabeur has only lost one set all tournament, and is coming off a strong win against Coco Gauff.

Can Kovinic Continue to Upset?
It’s been four years since Kovinic has competed at The Charleston Open, losing in the Round of 64 in 2017. But the now 26-year old has earned her spot in the semifinals after a strong showing in South Carolina this week. On top of the two upsets she’s recorded, she has only managed to lose two sets in her four matches so far.
Kovinic should be heading into this semifinal match with her confidence at an all time high. In the Round of 16, she defeated Petra Kvitova in straight sets, and most recently came back from behind after losing the first set to beat Yulia Putintseva 6(2)-7(7), 7-5, 6-1 in just under three hours during the quarterfinals.

With the win over Putintseva, Kovinic has reached her first semifinal in a WTA 500 tournament.
Kovinic really showcased a comeback win against Putintseva. The 26-year old was just a single game away from losing the match in the second set when she was serving 4-5, but something clicked, and she won nine of the last 10 games, sealing her victory.
Jabeur Ends Her Losing Streak
With her quarterfinal win over Coco Gauff, Jabeur was able to snap a five-match losing streak in WTA quarterfinals. This was also her first win over the 17-year old in their three career meetings.
This match against Gauff played out a lot different for Jabeur from start to finish. This time around Jabeur was able to set the tone and didn’t let the American teenager get going at all. She defeated Gauff 6-3, 6-3, in one hour and 20 minutes.
Jabeur outplayed her opponent in the match, and was able to convert six of nine breakpoints, but she did get some help from Gauff’s 31 unforced errors. In the first set, the American only managed a 38% first-serve percentage and recorded a total of 13 double faults in the match. Jabeur will have to tighten up her serve in her semifinal match, as it wasn’t her strength either, only recording a 53% first-serve percentage herself.

These two players have only played each other once before. They saw each other in Budapest in 2018 during the Round of 16. Jabeur dominated that match, winning 6-2, 6-1.

Best Bet
This should be a fairly close match between these two player based on the way they’ve been playing this week. Both have recorded strong wins and incredible comebacks. Kovinic has had to prove herself a bit more this tournament, and her wins were more unexpected going up against higher ranked and seeded players. But Jabeur has been consistent this week, which is why I’m giving her the edge.
Something to watch out for will be the serving. Neither player has put on a show with their serves this tournament, which has allowed for their opponents to usually gain some momentum at times.
With the way Kovinic has been playing, and the two big wins she’s coming off of, I’m expecting her to be able to take a set away, but Jabeur has had dominant straightset wins in three of her four matches so far this tournament.
