Despite it only being the quarterfinal, Roland Garros will see a thrilling matchup between Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev, the last two Olympic men’s singles champions. The Joker has won a record 24 grand slam titles, including three French Opens, while Zverev hasn’t won a singles major, but has been to a final three times, including last year’s French Open.

Action gets underway Wednesday, June 4th, at 2:15pm ET from Court Philippe-Chatrier in Paris, France, with TNT Sports, HBO Max and truTV providing the broadcast coverage in the United States, and TSN in Canada.

Novak Djokovic has breezed through the first four rounds, not losing a single set in wins versus Mackenzie McDonald, Corentin Moutet, Filip Misolic, and Cameron Norrie, none of which were ranked opponents. Of the first twelve sets he’s played, only one of them required him to break a sweat and face a tiebreak situation.

In the past three years, Novak has won twice at Roland Garros, with the other instance resulting in a quarters loss to eventual champion Rafael Nadal, who captured the last of his record 14 victories at the French.

Despite Alexander Zverev not having a singles grand slam trophy, he’s certainly no pushover, sporting the higher ranking (3rd, compared to 6th), and he’s won three of the last five meetings with his rival.

Overall, Djokovic has won eight of 13 contests against his foe, though six of those came in the first eight meetings. Despite not taking a French Open, Zverev is very comfortable on clay, having made the final last year, and the semis the three times prior to that.

In this tournament, the German has dispatched non ranked opponents in Learner Tien, Jesper De Jong, Flavio Cobolli and a fourth round walkover against Tallon Griekspoor. Unlike Djokovic, Zverev has lost a set, but just one to De Jong in the second round.

In their last two grand slam battles that resulted in a full match, there’s been a four-set triumph by the Joker at the 2021 Australian Open and a tough fought five set win by Djokovic at the 2021 US Open. With both players fresh coming in, and their recent major history versus one another, this contest should go at least four sets, if not the distance. That should get us over 40.5 games, which gives us a bit more value than taking the under.

The total games has been set at 40.5, with under slightly favored at -120 at FanDuel. Both competitors have the exact same -110 odds to make the semi-finals. Djokovic, however, is seen as more of a title threat; he’s listed at +900 in the latest French Open odds, ahead of Zverev at +1400.

With the exact same odds to win the match, Zverev has the miniscule match spread of -0.5. In grand slam events, the Joker has been victorious in three of four matchups, with the lone exception coming at this year’s Australian Open, when Djokovic retired, citing a torn muscle.

Zverev is used to competing in big matches, with two of his five victories over his counterpart coming in finals, with the other three in semis. Expect a tightly contested, hard fought match with a semifinal berth on the line.
