Jessica Pegula vs Coco Gauff Prediction

There’s a big age difference here. But 19-year-old Gauff and 29-year-old Pegula have forced a nice relationship as they have had huge success in doubles.

But they’ve rarely met in singles, rather surprising given both are top-10 players and often make the late stages of big tournaments.

They met once, in February 2022 in the first round of the WTA 500 Dubai tournament. Pegula was ranked No. 14 then, Gauff No. 20 and all eight seeds in the 32-player draw were in the top 10. So it was a pretty tough draw for both. Pegula won, 6-4, 6-4.

Both have played very little in the first two weeks of the grass season. Gauff lost in the second round in Berlin last week. Pegula didn’t play either week.

Despite being a decade younger, Gauff has a lot more grass-court experience at the top level. And her winning percentage of over 70 percent, while Pegula’s is barely over 50 percent. Gauff is the favorite, but not a huge one.

She has handier skills on the surface, and a bigger serve. And she’s played more on it this year and has had a much easier time of this week (and also, the easier of the two draws).

It sets up as a high-pressure affairs. Pegula, generally, is more adept at handling pressure situations in recent years. So the pluses and minuses balance out and it should be close.

Eastbourne International Picks: Jessica Pegula in Three Sets (+330)

Jelena Ostapenko vs Camila Giorgi Prediction

There will be zero subtlety to this Ostapenko vs Giorgi match, with both hitting big winners and making big errors.

The least error-prone on the day will likely win.

Ostapenko vs Giorgi Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2022 Eastbourne (SF) Grass 6-2, 6-2 Ostapenko
2017 Wimbledon (R32) Grass 7-5, 7-5 Ostapenko
2016 Katowice (SF) Indoor Hard 6-4, 6-3 Giorgi

The last two meetings between the two have been on grass. And Ostapenko took both in straight sets, including a year ago in the Eastbourne semifinals.

The Latvian is a machine. She won the Birmingham singles last week and reached the semis in doubles. The day after her singles win – unlike several of her peers, who cited fatigue and withdrew – she was playing doubles at Eastbourne and continues on in both events. It’s like she never gets tired.

So we don’t expect the match load to be a factor against Giorgi. Ostapenko handles the opponent’s pace better than most players on Tour. And she’s much more of a scrapper when she needs to be.

As it happens, they both faced 43-year-old Venus Williams last week in Birmingham. Williams beat Giorgi, and lost to Ostapenko.

The only way we see Giorgi winning is if she has one of those days she can have, where she just can’t miss. She hasn’t had many in the last little while.

Eastbourne International Picks: Ostapenko in Two Sets (+110)

Daria Kasatkina vs Caroline Garcia Prediction

You would expect Garcia to have had more issues in her career with Kasatkina’s spin and changes of pace. But that hasn’t been the case; she’s 2-1 although they’re 1-1 in their last two, both of which have been nailbiters.

Kasatkina had been unseeded, but moved into a seeded slot after Petra Kvitova pulled out. She’s had two good wins, over Anhelina Kalinina and the big-serving Karolina Pliskova.

The odds are about dead even, and this is an opportunity for an overconfident Garcia to flinch.

Eastbourne International Picks: Over 2.5 Sets (+114)
