Alexandrova Upsets Sabalenka

26-year old Alexandrova stunned Sabalenka when she went on to beat her 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the Moscow Open, to book a spot in her third career WTA 500 semifinal. Sabalenka hadn’t competed in over a month due to a positive COVID-19 test, but the Belarusian still entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, and favorite to win.

With the win, Alexandrova evened out her head-to-head against Sabalenka at 2-2. On route to her win, the Russian put together 21 winners to 17 unforced errors, while Sabalenka recorded 21 unforced errors, and just 11 winners. Alexandrova’s serve was a big part of her game, as she was able to land 65 percent of her first serve, and convert 84 percent of them into a point, all while only being broken once all match.

The Russian was able to finish off the match nicely to earn her fifth semifinal appearance on the year, as she now looks forward to go head-to-head against Sakkari.

Sakkari Claims Last Semifinal Spot

26-year old Sakkari was the last of the final four to book her spot in the semifinals. But the Greek star managed to do just that when she defeated former World No. 1 Simona Halep 6-4, 6-4, in their first career meeting.

Halep didn’t go down easy, but Sakkari was able to piece together enough to take this match. The Greek earned her first break to lead 3-1. Halep managed to put up a fight at 5-3, but after many rallies, where Sakkari held five set points, she finished it off to take that one set lead.

She then came out in the second to a strong start, taking a 2-0 lead, which turned into a 5-1 lead. Halep showed signs of coming back, winning eight of the next nine points, and almost evened it out at 5-4. But that seemed to be enough for Sakkari, who went on to win the set 6-4.

Head-to-Head

These two players have played each other a total of three time in the past. Their first meeting was held back in 2015, with their most recent head-to-head happening in 2019. Sakkari has won all three meetings, and won two of them in straight sets.

Best Bet

Yes, these two have faced each other three times before, but as mentioned, this will be their first meeting since 2019. Both Alexandrova and Sakkari have improved their games since then.

Alexandrova will look to have a slight edge playing in front of a home crowd, and coming off one of her biggest wins. Sakkari has been playing very strong all year, putting up a 34-17 record before entering this tournament.

Based on how both players have played this tournament, they both have the ability to take this match. Over the course of her three matches, Alexandrova has yet to drop a set, and the same goes for Sakkari over the two matches she’s played. Both of them have been tested. Yes, Alexandrova’s quarterfinal opponent in Sabalenka was a tougher test than Halep, but the Romanian still puts up a fight in every match.

This has all the makings to be an exciting, close semifinal. And with that, the best bet seems to be the odds of the match going the distance.

Best Bet: Ov 2.5 sets (+125)
