From Qualifiers to Finals

The young Brit has been writing her own story over the past few weeks in New York, and people are paying attention. Raducanu made history on Thursday night when she became the first qualifier, male or female, to earn a spot in a Major final.

In just under an hour and a half, Raducanu was able to defeat Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-4. She went on to hit 16 winners with 17 unforced errors, which are numbers that aren’t too impressive, but Sakkari recorded 17 winner to 33 unforced errors, which ultimately played a big part in the win.

Once again the Brit’s serves were a huge part of her game. She landed 71 percent of her first serves, while winning 72 percent of her first serves and following it up with winning 69 percent of her second serves.

Prior to her semifinal match, Raducanu also upset Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

She’ll now look to complete her Cinderella story when she goes up against fellow teenager Fernandez.

Fernandez’s Route to the Finals

The 19-year old Canadian definitely has had a tougher route to the final then her opponent. In order to earn her spot in the finals, Fernandez started facing seeded players as early as the third round. She went on to defeated third seed Naomi Osaka, 16th seed Angelique Kerber, fifth seed Elina Svitolina, and most recently second seed Aryna Sabalenka. With her win over Sabalenka, she collected her third Top 5 win of this week.

She went on to defeat the World No. 2 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 in a 2 hour and 20 minute showdown, to earn her spot in the final. Fernandez saved seven of 11 breakpoints she faced, and only recorded 23 unforced errors compared to her opponents 52.

It was not an easy win, as Sabalena came out strong to dictate the match, but Fernandez was able to piece together points, and take advantage of every little mistake her opponent made.

The 19-year old now becomes the second Canadian teenager in just the last three year to earn a spot in the US Open final. She joins Bianca Andreescu, who had a career defining tournament herself in 2019, where she won it all.

Head-to-Head

Raducanu and Fernandez have never faced each other before with their head-to-head record standing at 0-0. With both players under 20, this could very much be a rivalry in the making for years to come.

Best Bet

This is going to be a match for the books, for sure. These two have already put on quite a show over the past few weeks, and it’s pretty fitting that they meet in the final match. It’s just a finals that no one could’ve predicted.

Both players have been so strong on offense. Raducanu has shown her power but also her precision in her shot selection. Fernandez has found herself having to play strong defense on top of her excellent offense, just given the opponents she’s gone up against. She’s taken less riskier shots, with her variety, and instead, has played mostly in the backcourt, and has focused on strong groundstrokes.

Something that needs to be touched on at this point in a tournament is fatigue. And with Raducanu having played through qualifiers, she still has spent less time on the court than her final opponent.

Raducanu has proven to get the job done quickly, but we’ve seen that Fernandez can play the long game, should there need to be a deciding set. Something that Raducanu hasn’t had to face.

Best Bet: Ov 2.5 sets (+118); OR Fernandez (+146)
