Auger-Aliassime Battles Onward
Canada’s Auger-Aliassime is through to the final eight. However, it’s proven to be a harrowing journey.
The world #15 dropped the first set of his round of 16 match to American Frances Tiafoe 4-6. He committed four double faults while dropping the set. Then Auger-Aliassime rebounded to capture the next three sets 6-2, 7-6(8-6), 6-4 and take the match. The contest endured for three hours and 28 minutes.

It marked the third time in four matches at Flushing Meadows that the Canadian has been required to work at least four sets to carve out a victory. Auger-Aliassime needed all five sets to get past Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut, the #18 seed 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3 in the third round.
His first-round victory over Evgeny Donskoy was a four-set affair. Auger-Aliassime required tiebreakers to win each of his three sets – 7-6(7-0), 3-6, 7-6(7-1), 7-6(10-8). Only Auger-Aliassime’s second-round triumph over Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles was a straight-set affair. He won 7-6(7-5), 6-3, 6-2.
Against Tiafoe, Auger-Aliassime served 24 aces. He’s hit 77 of them so far in the tournament. He ranks third in that department. However, he only converted three of 15 service break opportunities.
For the tournament, he’s broken his opponent’s service 13 times. Meanwhile, Auger-Aliassime has dropped just seven of his own service games.
Alcaraz On Fire
The roll continues for Alcaraz and the career firsts keep on coming. This will be his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. His 5-7, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 victory in the round of 16 over Peter Gojowczyk marked the first time in his career that Alcaraz has won consecutive five-set matches.
He beat third-seeded and world #3 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(7-2), 0-6, 7-6(7-5) in third-round play. Just 18, he became the youngest player to beat a top-three player in US Open history.

World #55 Alcaraz opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 straight-set triumph over #26 seed Cameron Norris. He beat Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(8-6), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in second-round action.
The Spaniard has won 25 of his past 30 matches. That run of success includes Alcaraz’s first ATP Tour win. He beat France’s Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-2 in the July 25 final of an ATP 250 Masters event at Umag, Croatia.
Youth Being Served
Both Auger-Aliassime, 21, and Alcaraz are products at the ATP Tour’s Next Gen Tour. It’s the youngest pairing in a Grand Slam quarterfinal match since Rafael Nadal, 20, met Novak Djokovic, 19, at Roland Garros in the 2006 French Open.

Alcaraz is the youngest man to reach the tournament’s quarterfinals in the Open era. He’s the youngest ever since Thomaz Koch (18) in 1963. Auger-Aliassime is playing in his second straight Grand Slam quarterfinal. He’s also 2-0 against Spaniards in this tournament.
Auger-Aliassime (5-0) and Alcaraz are both unbeaten in tiebreakers in this tournament. While both players drive play via their strong power game, Auger-Aliassime is capable of dominance via his service game. That’s an element that Alcaraz simply can’t match.

Alcaraz is an extremely athletic and fit player. His lateral game keeps many balls in play. If he can do that against Auger-Aliassime, he’ll force the mistake-prone Canadian into errors that he won’t be able to overcome.

Ultimately, Auger-Aliassime’s service game should keep Alcaraz on the back foot. If Alcaraz struggles to get his first service in play, it could be a long night for him.
Pick: Felix Auger-Aliassime (-220); Auger-Aliassime 3-1 (+275)
