The stage has been set for the final four in San Diego. The first of the two semifinal matches being played later today will be between first seed Iga Swiatek and fourth seed Jessica Pegula.

Both players have two dominant wins under their belt this week, and will be well prepared heading into the semis. Pegula will be playing in front of a home crowd in America, but Swiatek is the best in the world. Where’s the best bet for this semifinal match?

Swiatek is the favorite heading into this match with -285 odds to move onto the finals. As the No. 1 seed, she’s been a favorite to win since the beginning.

Swiatek Strikes Again

The 21-year old had a bit of a hiccup in her opening match of the tournament, where she dropped the second set against her opponent, Qinwen Zheng, leading to a deciding set. But she managed to take control there, and go on to win 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, to move on.

It was her quarterfinal appearance that was rather impressive. She defeated Coco Gauff 6-0, 6-3, to earn a spot in the semis. This improved her head-to-head record against the American to 4-0, including a 11-1 record against any Top 10 opponent this year.

Usually Guaff and Swiatek actually see eye-to-eye for a lot of a match. The two are both quick and really strong on defense, but Swiatek showed to be too much for the young American this go around, where she absolutely dominated on offense.

This is now Swiateks 11th semifinal of the year, and of those 11 appearances, she’s won eight times, moving onto the final.

All-American Pegula

Prior to her semifinal match against Swiatek, Pegula went up against fellow countrywomen Coco Vandeweghe and Madison Keys.

Pegula has been perfect through two, having yet to drop a set. She defeated Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-1, and Keys 6-4, 7-5.

In her match against Keys, she was tested more than the previous round, but still managed to stay consistent throughout the match. There were times where Keys made unnecessary mistakes, and Pegula was able to take advantage to turn them into points.

Not only did she earn a spot in the semifinal with her win over Keys, but Pegula also qualified for the WTA Finals in both singles and doubles. She’ll now be the first American to be at the year end tournament in both events since Serena and Venus Williams did it in 2009. A pretty solid week.

Fourth Meeting of 2022

The last time these two went head-to-head was during the quarterfinals of the US Open just over a month ago. Swiatek went onto to win the Grand Slam.  Their current head-to-head is 3-1 in favor of Swiatek, who has won all their three previous meetings this year. But it was Pegula that won their first matchup back in 2019.

All three of Swiatek’s wins over Pegula this year has been done in straight sets.

Swiatek vs Pegula Prediction

This should be a fun match to watch. Both Swiatek and Pegula are playing strong tennis, but both will also be each other’s toughest opponent of the tournament to date.

Swiatek has been putting on a show, including a serving masterclass. The Pole didn’t drop her serve against Gauff, and has been showing her versatility and confidence more and more as she’s been adding variety into her service game.

Pegula on the other hand has been just as consistent, and showing no signs of slowing down. She’s thriving playing in front of a home crowd, and this will be her first match of the tournament where she’s no facing a fellow American. But she has lost all three matches this year against Swiatek, in straight sets.

It seems like Swiatek has a pretty good read on Pegula, so there’s no reason what she can’t go four for four in wins over the American this year.

Best Bet: Swiatek 2-0 (-130).
