Iga Swiatek of Poland looks up to the chair umpire after losing to Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in their semifinal match at the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif., Friday, March 17, 2023.
  • No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek meets No. 3 seed Ons Jabeur in the Stuttgart Open semifinals Saturday
  • Swiatek, also ranked world No. 1, is a strong favorite to beat Jabeur and reach the final
  • There is certainly upset potential here; we break down the match and make a prediction

The last time world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur met was the final of the US Open last August. This doesn’t have the same stakes, but it’s still a heavyweight battle despite the wide disparity in the pre-match odds.

Swiatek vs Jabeur Odds

Player Spread Moneyline Total
[1] Iga Swiatek (POL) -5.5 (+106) -500 O 20.5 (-106)
[3] Ons Jabeur (TUN) +5.5 (-140) +320 U 20.5 (-126)

Jabeur Masterful vs Haddad Maia

Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia was well-rested, as both of her previous opponents at the Stuttgart Open retired with injury. That included No. 6 seed Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals Thursday.

But despite fresh legs, the tall lefty was no match for Jabeur’s masterful court craft, especially her patented drop shot.

Jabeur ran away with a 6-3, 6-0 win and book a spot against the world No. 1 on Saturday.

Swiatek Struggles vs Surprising Pliskova

At 31, Karolina Pliskova’s days as a solid contender are a little bit behind her. But her effort in a losing cause against Swiatek Friday in Stuttgart sent a message: “Don’t forget about me. I’m still here”.

Swiatek said she got off to a slow start in what ended up as a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. But that’s not been an unusual situation for her lately.

In this particular case, that start had much do with a top-class level from Pliskova, who was bold with her own serve and gave it everything she had.

Swiatek will be happy to have gotten through it, not so happy with her form.

She seems to be battling a cold as well – it feels as though it’s a cold that has lasted for months – and even was blowing her nose in the middle of games.

After about five weeks away, though, the Polish star had to expect a few bumps in the road in her return in Stuttgart.

Meeting No. 6 between Swiatek and Jabeur

The head-to-head between the two is competitive, with Swiatek winning three of their five previous matches, and Jabeur winning two.

But Swiatek won both their encounters in 2022 – both in big finals. The first came outdoors on clay in the Rome WTA 1000. The second came in the final at the US Open. Both wins came in straight sets; the win on the Rome lay involved the loss of only four games.

Swiatek vs Jabeur Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2022 US Open (F) Outdoor Hard 6-2, 7-6 (5) Swiatek
2022 Rome (F) Outdoor Clay 6-2, 6-2 Swiatek
2021 Cincinnati (R32) Outdoor Hard 6-3, 6-3 Jabeur
2021 Wimbledon (R16) Grass 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 Jabeur
2019 Washington, D.C. (R32) Outdoor Hard 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 Swiatek

Jabeur’s trademark drop shot won’t work as well against Swiatek as it did against the bigger – and much slower – Haddad Maia. But she must still mix it in to keep Swiatek guessing.

Jabeur must also trust that her big forehand will match up well against Swiatek’s forehand, because the Polish player is likely to win most of the backhand vs. backhand battles.

Swiatek vs Jabeur Prediction

Jabeur, whose early season was interrupted by a procedure on her knee, showed she was rounding into form as she won the title in Charleston two weeks ago.

The American “Har-Tru” isn’t quite red clay; but the indoor clay in Stuttgart plays more like Charleston than Rome or Paris.

This one is going to be closer than the early odds would indicate.
