In a tournament that moved from May/June to September/October, with four of the top ten players choosing not to participate, unseeded Iga Swiatek found her place. The 19-year old became the lowest-ranked women’s finalist at the French Open when she won her semifinal match on Thursday. She will take on another tough opponent in 21-year old Sofia Kenin. Going into the Saturday, Swiatek is the favorite.

Swiatek’s Road to the Finals
54th ranked Swiatek has never won a tour-level title, let alone got past the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament prior to this tournament. Throughout the tournament, she has yet to drop a set through six matches so far. And she’s only dropped a total of 23 games, not having lost more than five games in a match.
In her semifinal match, she defeated Nadia Podoroska in a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win that lasted about 70 minutes. Despite Podoroska being unseeded, Swiatek did not have an easy road to the finals. She upset the likes of Simona Halep and Marketa Vondrousova to get here.

Swiatek’s play on the baseline is her strength. She’s got a heavy topspin, which has been working well with the clay surface and was able to record 23 winners in her semifinal match. Throughout her six matches, she’s recorded a total of 150 winners and 32 service breaks.
Kenin’s Road to the Finals
Australian Open champion, Kenin is playing for her second major title in 2020. She defeated her opponent, seventh seed Petra Kvitova in straight sets, winning 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 45 minutes. She had to find a way to bounceback after a rather shaky service game.
In her semifinal match, the American saved 10 of 12 breakpoints, while converting four of five against her opponent. This win became Kenin’s first win in three meetings against Kvitova.
Kenin enters the finals now 16-1 at majors this year and will be looking to end the year as she started it.

These two young players have never seen each other on tour before. They did face each other in juniors back in 2016, but this will definitely be the first of many meetings on tour, as both players are playing exceptional tennis.

Best Bet
The young polish player is having a career tournament, and it’s hard to argue that she isn’t the best bet. I want to be able to say that Kenin will be her toughest opponent to date at the tournament, but that’s just not the case. Her toughest opponent would’ve been Simona Halep, and as we all know, Swiatek put on an incredible performance to send Halep home.
Something to note and keep in mind with Swiatek is that she won’t have a complete days rest like her opponent. She will be participating in the doubles semifinal on Friday with her partner.

Kenin has the opportunity to become the first American to win two majors in one year since Serena Williams did it 2015. And yes, that Australian Open win was in 2020, despite feeling like years ago.
The pressure of the finals will be something to watch with Swiatek. Last year at this tournament, there was another unseeded player in the final, Marketa Vondrousova, and she didn’t handle the pressure well at all, she completely collapsed, losing to Ashleigh Barty 6-1, 6-3. Kenin definitely has the upper hand when it comes to experience, despite both of their young age.
