Defending Champion Continues

It took three sets, but the defending champion, Pegula defeated Martina Trevisan 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals for the second year in a row. The two were pretty familiar with each other heading into the match, having played each other a couple of times. Pegula continues to hold the head-to-head edge.

En route to the win Pegula managed to break Trevisan twice, but she was broken four times in the second set, that she ended up losing.

Kudermetova Defeats Kasatkina

For the first time in her career, 26-year old Kudermetova beat fellow countrywoman Kasatkina 7-5, 1-6, 7(7)-6(2) to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.

Kudermetova had to save two match points in order to win, and in the decider there, it wasn’t looking good. After a long first set, Kudermetova managed to take it to go up 1-0 in the match. But Kasatkina had her number in the second, quickly taking it 6-1. The momentum was strong for Kasatkina heading into the third, who had a 2-0 head-to-head record over Kudermetova. But the 26-year old found a way to defeat her and get one match closer to an even head-to-head record.

The First Meeting

This will be the first time Pegula and Kudermetova meet on tour. Because of that, we don’t have much to go off of. Although Pegula has played quite a bit more tennis than Kudermetova has this year.
