Struff Continues

The lucky loser has played quite a few matches this week en route to the quarterfinals. After breezing through the qualifiers, Struff received his first real challenge against Ben Shelton. The hard serving American tested the 33-year old, but he rose to the challenge, piecing together a comeback to win in three.

In the round of 32, the match looked all to familiar, as it mirrored his match before. But it was his round of 16 match against Pedro Cachin, where he really stepped up. Despite giving up the second set to his opponent, he definitely outplayed him throughout the match.

He’ll now face his toughest opponent of the tournament to date, but he has taken a couple matches from Tsitsipas, so anything can happen.

Tsitsipas Finds a Way to Win

It took a lot of of him, but Tsitsipas managed to find a way to win in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Madrid. He eventually defeated his round of 16 opponent Bernabe Zapata Miralles at 12:35am local time, winning 6-3, 6-1.

Despite that straightforward score, the match was anything but that. Tsitsipas ended up breaking three times, which he had to figure out a way to bounce back from. Zapata Miralles of Spain is also very familiar with the clay court surface.

After two three set matches, Tstisipas put his round of 16 opponent away, but the Greek has been tested since the beginning of the week. He should have the upper hand against his quarterfinal opponent, but unless he wants another long battle, he’ll have to tighten up his game just a bit.

A Sixth Meeting

Despite having faced each other five times on tour, and an additional time in a qualifying match, the two probably don’t know each other that well on the court. The last time they went head-to-head was in 2020, and both players’ game has changed.

Tsistipas does hold a 3-2 head-to-head lead, and won the last two meetings in 2020, but Struff is the one who holds the win on an outdoor clay court. Yes, it’s worth noting, but the fact is, it happened in 2019, and shouldn’t hold that much weight.

Struff vs Tsitsipas Pick

This will definitely be an interesting and exciting match to watch. Tsitsipas has definitely been tested all tournament, but as we know, has found ways to win. Struff has also stepped up, and has managed to piece together wins this week as well.

The two will challenge each other, whether it’s with their strong groundstrokes or serves. Of their five previous matches, four of them have gone the distance, so look for that to be the best bet here.
