Samsonova Serves into the Finals

It took just under two and a half hours for Samsonova to earn her spot in the final, but she did so with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win over Zheng Qinwen. With the win, she extends her head-to-head against Qinwen to 2-1.

Once again, Samsonova had her serve working well for her. But for the first time all tournament, she was match on her serve. The Russian put up 10 aces, with her opponent recording 15.

The match went back and forth up until the third set, where at 4-4, Samsonova managed to build in a lead. The Russian became the more agressive player heading into the third, and it was ultimately what was needed to win.

Bencic’s Second Final of the Year

Second seed, Bencic defeated sixth seed Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-2, 6-3, to capture her 11th match win of the year and reach the final of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open.

The Swiss only needed an hour and a half to win against her semifinal opponent. She put an end to Haddad Maia’s winning streak against Top 10 players. The Brazilian had won in her last six matches against Top 10 opponents.

Heading into the semifinal match, Bencic was quite rested compared to her opponent. Both players had played the same amount of matches this tournament, but the hours they had spent on the court was drastically different. Haddad Maia had every match go three sets, while Bencic just had one. The Brazilian had spent a total of seven hours and 43 minutes on the court heading into their semifinal match, while Bencic had only spent three hours and 20 minutes.

The final part of Bencic’s game that really shut down her opponent, was her serve. The Swiss recorded a 74 win percentage when landing her first serves, and an even more impressive 81 percent when landing her second.

Bencic now ties Aryna Sabalneka for most tour-level match wins in the year so far. She could surpass the World No. 2 tomorrow with a win.

Fourth Meeting

This will be the fourth time Samsonova and Bencic go head-to-head. All three of their previous meetings came back in 2021. Their first was the final in Berlin, where Samsonova won in three, and their last meeting was at the BJK Cup Finals – Finals Round 4, where Samsonova won again in three. Two of the three matches saw Samsonova lose the first set, and put together a comeback to win.

Samsonova vs Bencic Pick

This will be an exciting final match, that could really go either way.

Both players have a strong serve, and will be coming in aggressive and confident. But fatigue could play a factor in this match. Samsonova has played much more tennis this week, as she was given a bye as the eighth seed. Bencic on the other hand has breezed through her opponents since the second round.

The thing is Bencic has never been able to win against Samsonova. But Bencic is playing the best tennis of her career after a great start to the season, continuing from last year.

Regardless of the winner here, look for the match to go the distance.

Best Bet: Over 2.5 sets (+116)
