Berrettini Continues to Dominate on Grass

25-year old Berrettini has been near perfect on grass this season. He entered Wimbledon coming off a title win at the Queen’s Club Championship, and has now extended his grass court winning streak to 10 matches. He has now become the first Italian man to reach the semifinals at The Championships.

In his quarterfinal match he was up against young Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime, where he won 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. This was a tight back and forth match from the start, but Berrettini was the one who was able to minimize the unforced errors and be more consistent from start to finish. It took just over three hours, but with the win, the Italian improved his career tour-level record on grass to 23-5.

Hurkacz Upsets Federer

You could argue that Hurkacz may have just recorded the biggest win of his career when he ended Roger Federer’s 2021 run at Wimbledon. The 24-year old was cool, calm, and collected as he defeated his idol 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-0, to earn a spot in his first Grand Slam semifinal.

The expectations weren’t very high for Hurkacz heading in to Wimbledon. He was riding a six-match losing streak going back to April, and had never defeated a Top 10 player at a Grand Slam. All that changed in the fourth round, when he took down World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev, and of course, most recently Federer.

Hurkacz honestly just outplayed Federer in this match. In just under two hours, the 24-year old recorded 10 aces while winning 79 percent of points when he landed his first serve.

Head-to-Head

These two players have seen each other once before on tour, back in 2019. Hurkacz won that Round of 128 match at the ATP Masters 1000 Miami in straight sets. Berrettini has definitely since found his groove since 2019, as he broke out on tour when he made the semifinals of the US Open that year.

Berrettini enters this match as the favorite, rightfully so, as his past few weeks have been stellar. But don’t be so quick to look past Hurkacz. What’s quite different about these two players’ playing style is Berrettini is heavy on the offense, while Hurkacz is a really strong defender.

Again, both players have a very strong serve that they’ve relied on heavily during the tournament. The Italian has recorded 79 aces over his five matches, and Hurkacz has recorded 48 himself.

This has all the makings to be a really exciting battle. Both players bring quite a bit to the table in terms of experience and style of play. The fact that they haven’t played each other on grass before makes this match more unpredictable as we know the court surface can have a huge impact in the match. Berrettini might have the slight edge here, but I think it’s going to go the distance.
