Djokovic Looking to Make History

Everyone is watching and waiting to see if this is the tournament that Djokovic makes history at. As I mentioned, he’s not only bidding for his record-breaking 21st Major title, but the Calendar Grand Slam is on the line as well.

The Serb is currently riding a 25-match winning streak at the Majors, and is coming off a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over unseeded American Jenson Brooksby to earn his spot in the final eight.

The 34-year old is still playing great tennis, but he’s not playing as great as we’ve seen recently. But because it’s Djokovic, it’ll most likely be enough to make history. We’ve seen that he finds a way. Djokovic has lost a total of three sets in his four matches here in New York.

He’ll look towards Berrettini who he’s been able to find success against in the past, including two wins at Grand Slams this year. Berrettini will be his toughest opponent of the tournament so far, so he’ll have to tighten up a few things to move onto the semifinals.

Berrettini’s Second Career US Open Quarterfinal

The 25-year old has definitely been challenged at this year’s US Open. Berrettini has seen three of his four matches go beyond three sets. He was pushed to five sets in his third round match against Ilya Ivashka, and most recently four sets against qualifier Oscar Otte. He went on to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Overall, Berrettini’s had an impressive year. He’s racked up a 33-8 record, and made his first Grand Slam finals appearance at Wimbledon.

As it’s the second week of the Grand Slam, again, fatigue is a common factor to look out for. The Italian hasn’t really shown any signs of his injury reappearing, but he did have a thigh injury just a few short weeks ago.

Head-to-Head

These two men are no strangers to one another. This will be the fourth meeting between Djokovic and Berrettini, with their last meeting happening at the finals of this year’s Wimbledon. Djokovic went on to win that match in four sets, and currently holds the head-to-head record at 3-0.

Two of their meetings have come this year, and were both at a Grand Slam. Their most recent match at Wimbledon, and then also at this year’s French Open quarterfinals.

Best Bet

Expect this to be a battle between these two players. The past two matches this year where Djokovic and Berrettini have played each other, we’ve seen that they need to be on their game.

Look for Djokovic to rely on his serve, as he usually does. Although he didn’t have the perfect touch in his fourth round match, he’s one that usually relies on it to get out of tricky situations, and it’s done him well in the past.

If Berrettini can take advantage of any little mistake Djokovic commits, it’ll make it very interesting. Djokovic has shown to get frustrated, and when he allows that to happen, it can be a domino effect. Both players are completely capable of taking this match, but it’ll be a long one.

Best Bet: Ov 3.5 sets (-112)
