Battling Bautista Agut Staves Off Exit

Three times in his round of 16 match against Schwartzman, Bautista Agut found himself facing match point. Each time, he managed to stave off his finish and ultimately, survived to play another day.

Down 3-5 in the third set, Bautista fought back to defeat Schwartzman 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. It was during the tenth game of the third set when Bautista Agut, down 4-5 at the time, found himself with no more points to give on three occasions.

The Spaniard won the final four matches of the third set to rally for the victory. He required a pair of match points himself before finally overcoming Schwartzman and completing the rally. Bautista Agut is now 2-1 in his career when facing Schwartzman. Interestingly, both of his victories over the Argentine have come in this event.

This is the third time that Bautista Agut has reached the quarterfinals of this event. He’s yet to make it to the semifinals.

In 2017, he was ousted by Roger Federer at this stage of the tournamment. Two years later, Bautista Agut lost to Gael Monfils.

Life of Reilly

Opelka was also required to stave off a match point as he was pushed to the limit by Harris. He rallied for a 4-6, 7-6(8-6), 7-6(7-4) victory over the South African who recently beat Rafael Nadal in Washington.

Statistically the match was advantage Harris. He held a slight 73-70 edge in first-serve percentage. Harris was ahead 81-73 on first-serve wins and 71-58 on second-serve wins.

The South African also showed dominance in receiving points won (41-24) and overall points won (120-11). He also scored the only service break of the match.

Each player served 21 aces. The main edge for Opelka was in the two tiebreakers he captured.

So far in Toronto, world #32 Opelka has survived a three-set showdown with Australian Nick Kyrgios. Then he tumbled #14 seed Grigor Dimitrov right out of the tournament in straight sets.

In the Pink

Both Schwartzman and Opelka are known on the ATP Tour for their flashy pink tie-dye tennis kits. Now, Bautista could pink out the tournament on consecutive days.

Bautista Agut has won two of three previous matches from Opelka. However, in their only prior quarterfinal match, it was Opelka who came away the winner.

Bautista Agut won over Opelka in straight sets in the round of 32 at the 2019 Shangai Masters. He was also a winner over the American earlier this year in three sets in the round of 32 at Doha.

Opelka’s victory over the Spaniard was in the quarterfinals at Basel in 2019. It was also a three-set affair.
