  • And those two meet, as No. 6 Daniil Medvedev plays No. 3 Félix Auger-Aliassime

Thursday’s second round at the Rotterdam provided some shockers, as No. 1 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and No. 4 Holger Rune were eliminated. For the rest of the field, that means some great opportunities.

Jannik Sinner is the biggest favorite in the ABN AMRO World Tennis Championships odds above at -400 to defeat Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals.

Medvedev vs Auger-Aliassime Prediction

The last time these two met, it was a huge opportunity for the then-21-year-old Canadian to make a really deep run at the Australian Open. And he went up two sets to none.

And then … he lost in five close sets.

Those things leave marks. But Medvedev was playing a lot better a year ago than he is now. And Auger-Aliassime has great memories on the Rotterdam court they’ll compete on Friday, as the defending champion.

Those elements alone should make this a very close one, even with the head-to-head lopsided in Medvedev’s favor.

Medvedev vs Auger-Aliassime Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2022 Australian Open (QF) Outdoor Hard 6-7 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5, 6-4 Medvedev
2022 ATP Cup (SF) Outdoor Hard 6-4, 6-0 Medvedev
2021 US Open (SF) Outdoor Hard 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 Medvedev
2018 Masters Canada (R32) Outdoor Hard 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7) Medvedev

If you’re feeling brave, picking Auger-Aliassime in three sets (at +380) isn’t all that outlandish. A safer bet is to go with the match going the distance.

Medvedev’s straight-sets loss to Sebastian Korda in the third round of the Australian Open this year, and the subsequent drop in rankings, have left the Russian a bit short of rhythm and confidence. And he’s also the lower-ranked (and lower-seeded) of the two.

Auger-Aliassime hasn’t dropped a set in his two matches. Medvedev dropped the first set in his opener against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, but has been untroubled since then.

Rotterdam Open Picks: Over 2.5 Sets (+110)

Sinner vs Wawrinka Prediction

Sinner posted his first win over the 37-year-old Wawrinka last summer at Wimbledon, a tough first-round draw for the veteran Swiss as he returned from several knee surgeries with a ranking of No. 267.

But a few years ago, when Sinner was a rising 17-year-old just outside the top 100 and Wawrinka around the top 20, he defeated the Italian twice, without much trouble.

Wawrinka had a great serving day in defeating his mercurial doubles partner this week, Alexander Bublik, in straight sets to open. And then he posted his first win over contemporary Richard Gasquet since … 2013 to make the quarters.

The Swiss star’s success rate on his second serve this week has been at a winning 60 percent.

For his part, Sinner had a tougher time with unseeded Benjamin Bonzi in the first round than he did in straight-setting a sub-par Stefanos Tsitsipas on Thursday. Tsitsipas had won five of their previous six meetings.

The riskier pick would be to back the senior(ish) citizen and look for Wawrinka in three (+550). But Sinner, who’s on a roll after winning the ATP 250 in Montpellier last week, looks right to be the favorite.

Rotterdam Open Picks: Sinner in two sets (-125)

Dimitrov vs De Minaur Prediction

De Minaur, who will be playing this match on his 24th birthday, has won two of his career meetings with Dimitrov, 31.

They were the most recent two, as well, with three tiebreaks among the five sets, a 7-5 set, and a 6-4 set.

So the total game count likely will be high.

Generally, de Minaur has far more break opportunities on Dimitrov’s serve than the other way around. But his conversion numbers (last summer in Montreal, he went 2-for-12) haven’t been great.

Dimitrov seems to be coasting at times on the back side of his career, as he destroyed Aslan Karatsev in the first round in Rotterdam. And then he squeezed out an upset win in two tiebreaks over No. 5 seed Hubert Hurkacz. Any given week, he can still make some noise.

DeMinaur in three sets (at +350) looks like a decent bet.

Rotterdam Open Picks: Over 10.5 games in the first set (+195)
