Sabalenka vs Anisimova Picks & Predictions

  • Over 21.5 games (-120) at FanDuel

Sabalenka entered the tournament as the favorite in the US Open odds, and has lost just one set on her way back to the final. She dropped the opening set to #4 Jessica Pegula in the semis, but rallied to win the second and third 6-3, 6-4. Sabalenka smacked 43 winners, 22 more than her opponent, and is now a win away from becoming the first woman since Serena Williams to go back-to-back in New York.

It won’t be easy however, as she’ll face a woman who’s had her number recently. Anisimova holds a 6-3 advantage over Sabalenka all-time, and recently took her down in the Wimbledon semis. The #8 seed has also dropped just a single set en route to the final, and she just overcame nail-biting three-setter versus #23 Naomi Osaka on Thursday.

In addition to that victory, Anisimova has also taken down #2 Iga Swiatek, and #18 Beatriz Haddad Maia. She’s playing some of the best tennis of her career this summer, and has the power to go blow-for-blow with Sabalenka from the baseline. Anisimova boasts a powerful backhand that she can control points with, and has been one of the best servers in the women’s draw all tournament.

In fact, both Sabalenka and Anisimova have been serving lights out for the last two weeks. That’s going to put a ton of pressure on both players return games, and that’s where the American has the advantage. Anisimova is the tournament leader in 1st serve receiving points won with 103, nearly double the amount of Sabalenka (57).

I predict Anisimova is going to produce plenty of break-point opportunities, and will cash enough of them to prolong this match even if she ultimately falls short. She’s got plenty of firepower to dictate points, and with the entire American crowd behind her, she’ll continue to push Sabalenka to the brink, just in like in their recent matchups.

Speaking of those recent battles, we mentioned Anisimova’s sparkling record versus Sabalenka, which includes two wins in their last three meetings. She’s taken at least a set off the World No. 1 in seven of nine matches, and has won two of their three hard court battles. Five of their last seven battles have exceeded 21.5 games, and I’m betting this one will as well.
