Odds as of April 23rd

Sabalenka’s Strong Showing

Sabalenka is coming off a three set win over Anett Kontaveit, where she defeated the Estonian 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Despite her World No. 7 ranking, the Belarusian is the lowest ranked player in the final four here in Germany. That’s how tough the competition is.

Her win against Kontaveit was big. Kontaveit came into the match with a 11-3 record at this tournament, and she was able to force a decider when she converted her fourth set point in that second set. Sabalenka was able to take control in the third set, and saved 15 of 18 breakpoints against her during this match.

Sabalenka is a very strong and powerful player who will test Halep, but will she be able to get past her?

Halep’s Strong Start to her Clay Court Season

Current World No. 3 Halep said she has a goal of winning all the clay court tournament this year.

Well, she has had a pretty impressive start to it here in Germany. The Romanian heads into the semifinals after two strong straightset wins. She started with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Marketa Vondrousova to start the tournament, and followed it up with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ekaterina Alexandrova in the quarterfinals.

With this semifinal appearance, Halep has matched her best result here that she accomplished in both 2015 and 2017. She’s still searching for her first final appearance in Stuttgart, and will have to get through Sabalenka for that to happen. But she does hold a 3-1 career record over the Belarusian.

Head-to-Head

These two are relatively familiar with each other having played each other four times in the past. Their first meeting came back in 2018, where Halep won in straight sets, and their most recent meeting happened in 2020 at the Dubai Open quarterfinals.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Simona Halep Best Bet

Both players know what to expect from each other heading into this match, they’ve seen each other enough times.

Halep had actually lost the last two previous matches to Vondrousova and Alexandrova heading into her matches against them here, but she was able to defeat both of them easily. Because of that, I’d say that Halep has a little more energy, and maybe that little break for rehab has helped her reset a couple months into 2021. A lot of players can be dangerous after some rest, and I think that’s the case here with Halep. Especially here on clay.

Sabalenka has a few more matches under her belt in 2021, which includes a title. But Halep leads the clay court power rankings from 2020 . She came in as No. 1 in the rankings with 6591.50 points, a 74.3% career win percentage on the surface, and a 24-4 2019-20 record. Sabalenka didn’t make the Top 10.

With that being said, I don’t think Sabalenka will be able to beat Halep here, but I do think that she might be able to take a set off her.

The Pick: Halep (-195); OR Halep 2- (+132)
