Stan Wawrinka, who faces Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals, is one of four former champions entered in men’s singles play at the Australian Open.

That little bit of history doesn’t seem to hold a lot of substance with online sportsbooks as Wawrinka prepares for his match against Zverev.

They list #7 seed Zverev as the -155 favorite to defeat 15th-seeded Wawrinka in Tuesday’s quarterfinal, slated for 7:00 PM ET.

Wawrinka defeated #4 seed, Daniil Medvedev, in fourth-round action. Zverev hasn’t dropped a set the entire tournament.

Wawrinka Overcomes Medvedev

Everything pointed to a Medvedev victory over Wawrinka in their fourth-round match. Medvedev won an ATP Tour-leading 59 matches last year, along with four tournament titles.

In two previous meetings in Grand Slam events, Medvedev dispatched his Swiss opponent in four sets. And the stage looked set for a repeat when Medvedev went ahead 2-1. But this time, Wawrinka was the one with the answers, rallying for a 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 7-6(7-2), 6-2 victory.

Wawrinka hit 71 winners in a match that lasted three hours and 25 minutes. Avenging his loss to Medvedev in last year’s US Open quarterfinals, Wawrinka chalked up his bounce back in the match to a renewed inner confidence.

The three-time Grand Slam winner has seen injuries derail his game in recent years. The 34-year-old’s last title on this stage was at the 2016 US Open. Once ranked as high as #3 in the world, Wawrinka is currently situated at #15.

Zverev Ousts Childhood Pal

Moving on to the quarterfinals without dropping a single set, Germany’s Zverev dropped Russia’s Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in their fourth-round match. The two grew up together as pals since the age of 10.

Rublev came into the meeting riding a 15-match winning streak, and was already a winner of two tournaments this year, but was no match for Zverev. The German won 49 of 54 first-service points, including 11 aces.

Zverev is in the Australian Open quarterfinals for the first time. He’s twice reached the quarterfinal stage at the French Open, in 2018 and 2019.

Just 22, world #7 Zverev has never gone past the quarters at any Grand Slam event. His inconsistent performances are continuing this season. Zverev was 0-3 representing Germany at the ATP Cup and is 4-0 in Melbourne.

Head-to-Head History Favors Zverev

This will be the third on-court clash between Wawrinka and Zverev and the latter holds a 2-0 advantage. Zverev won both matches in four sets.

Zverev beat Wawrinka 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the Round of 16 at the 2017 Miami ATP Masters 1000. He won 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the final at St. Petersburg in 2016.

Zverev is also 12 years younger than Wawrinka and you have to wonder what the latter’s marathon match with Medvedev will have taken out of him. This was also his third five-set match in four rounds at Melbourne.

Meanwhile, Zverev is breezing through one three-set match after another. It took him just 97 minutes to overcome Rublev.

This is the fifth time that Wawrinka has gone at least as far as the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. But it’s his best showing since a semifinal effort in 2017. The Swiss player made second-round exits at Melbourne in 2018 and 2019.

Another fact to remember – Wawrinka was also 0-2 against Medvedev prior to this fourth-round win over the Russian player.

Pick: Stan Wawrinka (+125)
