They’re onto the quarterfinals of this week’s ATP Tour stop in Kazakhstan. The second quarterfinal match of the Astana Open on Friday profiles to be the most competitive, as the third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas faces seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz.

Both players have yet to drop a set through two matches, while Hurkacz needs to continue to pile up victories if he hopes to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals next month.

The odds are against him on Friday however, as the higher seed Tsitsipas, who’s already booked his place in Turin, opened up as a slight favorite.

Tsitsipas Holds Serve in Round of 16

Of the two, Tsitsipas has had the tougher road to the quarters despite being placed on the easier side of the draw. The Greek cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the round of 32 over wildcard Mikhail Kukushkin, but was given all he could handle in the round of 16.

Tsitsipas outlasted Italian teen Luca Nardi, in a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 victory. Neither player dropped their serve, while Nardi earned the only two break points.

Tsitsipas won 84 percent of his first serve points, improving to 51-18 for the year, en route to reaching his 12th tour-level quarterfinal of 2022. He’s won two titles in back-to-back years but hasn’t claimed a hard court crown since 2020 in Marseille.

Hurkacz Hungry to Move Up Rankings

A title this week would go a long way in securing Hurkacz’s spot in Turin. He started the tournament with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Francisco Cerundolo, and followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 dismissal of Alexander Bublik. Hurkacz won 78% of his first serve points against Bublik, and earned 13 break points, converting on three of them.

The 25-year-old advanced to his eighth quarterfinal of the season and is searching for his second title. He won earlier this year on grass in Halle, after claiming three titles in 2021 – all on hard courts.

After back-to-back early-round losses at the US Open and the Western and Southern Open, Hurkacz made it all the way to the semis in his most recent tournament, albeit in an ATP Tour 250 field. He’s 23-11 on hard courts this season, but has fared not very well against Tsitsipas in the past.

Tsitsipas vs Hurkacz Pick

The Greek is 6-2 all-time against him, with all eight matches coming on hard courts. Tsitsipas has won all four of the indoor matches, which should give him plenty of confidence since Friday’s matchup is inside.

Neither player has excelled versus top-10 competition this year, with both posting identical 5-4 records. These odds reflect a tightly contested match, and if it does go the distance Tsitsipas has proven to be much more effective in the deciding set. He boasts a .773 winning percentage in matches that require a final set, compared to a 60% win rate for Hurkacz.

Seven of the eight career meetings between these two have gone the distance, giving us an excellent opportunity to parlay two favorable wagers. Let’s back Tsitsipas to win and over 22.5 games for a generous +220 payout.

Picks: Tsitsipas to win + Over 22.5 games (+220)
