Odds as of September 2nd at DraftKings

[15] Elise Mertens vs [20] Ons Jabeur

Mertens and Jabeur will face off for the first time in their careers on Friday in the third round. It’s surprising that these two have never crossed paths before.

Mertens started the Grand Slam by having to piece together a comeback after losing the first set of her opening match. The Belgian went on to save multiple match points against her opponent Rebecca Peterson, but eventually captured the win after over three and a half hours. She then went on to win her second round match against Greek qualifier in straight sets.

Jabeur has been on a tear since the start of the tournament. She was tested in her opening round, but went on to win 7-5, 7-5 against Alize Cornet. She then only went on to drop one game all match against Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in the second round.

These two have opposite styles of play. Jabeur definitely uses more variety in her game, and is more crafty on offense. Mertens relies on her strong groundstrokes and heavy forehands.

The competition is tough, but it does seem like Jabeur has the slight edge here. Just don’t be surprised if Mertens steals a set.

Best Bet: Over 2.5 sets (+135)

[19] Elena Rybakina vs [12] Simona Halep Prediction

Rybakina and Halep have played each other twice before with their current head-to-head record standing at 1-1. Their most recent meeting came in 2020 in the finals at Dubai where Halep won after losing the first set.

Neither player has dropped a set on route to the third round, and this should be an exciting match. Usually Halep will enter most tournament and matches as a clear favorite, but due to taking quite a bit of time off this season due to injury, that’s not the case. But she’s eased past her first two opponents here at The US Open, and looks to be getting back into form.

Rybakina has already secured a career best showing her at The US Open. Prior to this year she had never made it past the second round. She’ll be looking to continue her momentum against Halep, but it’ll be a tricky match.

Halep has the edge here, as she’s shown zero signs of an injury holding her back.

Best Bet: Halep 2-0 (+155)

[18] Victoria Azarenka vs [9] Garbine Muguruza Prediction

Azarenka and Muguruza are quite familiar with one another as this will be their fifth time playing each other. Their current head-to-head record stands at 2-2. Muguruza won their most recent meeting in Rome in 2020, in three sets.

Both Azarenka and Muguruza have eased past their first and second round opponents, not dropping a set.

Muguruza has had a great 2021 season so far. She headed into The US Open with a 31-13 record, and had captured a title in Dubai. Azarenka has had an up and down season. She’s found success and has made deep runs at tournaments, but hasn’t been able to secure a title. But she’s no stranger here in New York, as she is a three-time finalist at The US Open.

These two have a similar playing style, and there will be a ton of baseline exchanges and rallies on Friday. Serving will be a important part of this match, and could be the difference in it. Either way, this will be a battle and expect it to go the distance.

Over 2.5 sets (+140)
