Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka will face off against each other in a marquee matchup at the China Open Finals early Sunday morning. The two young superstars are coming off big semifinal wins, where they beat Kiki Bertens and Caroline Wozniacki, respectively. Both Barty and Osaka came into the tournament with fairly good odds. Osaka’s China Open odds were +900, and Barty’s +1000.

Osaka’s Road to the Finals

It was a relatively easy semifinal match for the Japanese star, who took down defending champion Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets on Saturday, winning 6-4, 6-3 in just an hour and 24 minutes. Osaka’s time at the China Open has been nothing less of spectacular. The 21-year old has only dropped one set as she’s dominated her way through Beijing, and she snapped Bianca Andreescu’s 17-match winning streak.

Her match against Caroline Wozniacki started out fairly even and tight, especially in the first set. The first six games all went to the server, with no one breaking anyone. Right from the start, Osaka was ready to play. Osaka recorded 30 winners and five aces. Her serving was once against her strong suit this match, winning 76% of points behind her first serve.

Barty’s Road to the Finals

World No.1 Ashleigh Barty heads into her second premier mandatory final of the season at the China Open. She nearly didn’t make it, but saved a match point to beat Kiki Bertens in the semifinals on Saturday. Barty ended up winning, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7).

Starting off strong, Barty won 12 of the first 14 points on Saturday. But despite that phenomenal start, she was still literally one point away from losing in the final set. Barty saved match point in the tiebreak after coming back from being down 5-3, as well as trailing 3-0  and 5-4 in the tiebreaker. Barty extends her record to 5-0 against the Danish tennis star.

Head-to-Head Match Up

This is the pair’s fourth career meeting. Barty currently leads the head-to-head series 2-1, but this final could really go either way. The most recent matchup came in the semifinals of Nottingham in 2018 where Barty won in straight sets, taking it 6-3, 6-4.

Both players are strong, aggressive players who like to attack. Barty and Osaka play a very similar game, try to get in front right away, and don’t let the game come to them. The style of play always makes for a fun match to watch, and Sunday morning’s contest will be no different, as both players are playing some of their best tennis.

Who Do You Take?

Tennis fans couldn’t ask for a better finals matchup in China. Surprisingly, Osaka has the better odds in this match at -145, where Barty is +115. But if Osaka wants to upset the World No. 1, the key is to limit the unforced errors. Barty is extremely consistent, and has a ton of power. Osaka has the power too, it’s just a matter of the consistency.

Barty will change up her shots throughout the match, and Osaka will have to adjust as well. But both players have shown that they have the ability to win, and to win against one another. So whoever comes out the most aggressive, and starts off strong will take home the trophy.

Pick: Osaka (-145)
