Sunday, USA squares off in a duel against Switzerland to win the gold medal at the IIHF World Championship. Remarkably, USA has not won this tournament since way back in 1933. The Swiss are in the final for the second straight year, looking for their first ever gold, having also taken silver in the modern era in 2013 and 2018 to along with 2024.
Puck drop is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. ET from the Avicii Arena in Stockholm, with NHL Network providing the broadcast in the U.S and TSN in Canada.
USA vs Switzerland Odds
The United States are currently a -125 moneyline favorite, with Switzerland installed as a +105 underdog. The total is set at 5.5, with the under tabbed as the most likely outcome. Both sides blew way over the 5.5 total mark in their respective semi-final matchups, with USA-Sweden combining for eight goals and Switzerland/Denmark seven markers.
USA’s -125 odds translate to an implied probability of 55.6% of the favorites emerging victorious. A $125 bet on USA would return $100. Meanwhile, Switzerland’s +105 odds suggest a 48.8% implied probability, with a successful $100 wager paying out $105.

USA vs Switzerland Prediction
- Over 5.5 Goals (+105) at bet365
Both teams have been fantastic in goal scoring, going 1-2 in the tournament – Switzerland has 47 goals, while USA has 45. The United States has scored at least five goals in all but one of their nine games of the tournament. The lone outlier is significant, however, as it was a 3-0 loss to the Swiss in the preliminary round.
The Americans boast an explosive offense that has five players with double-digit points in the tournament. They’re led by Frank Nazar and his twelve points, and Logan Cooley has eleven. The power play has been clicking with a 32.1% efficiency, bettered only by Switzerland’s 34.4%. In the knockout stage, USA has 5-2 victories over Finland and 6-2 versus Sweden in the semis.
Goaltender Jeremy Swayman has had a very good tournament for USA, allowing just twelve goals and he has a save percentage of .905. However, he’s been overshadowed by the remarkable play of Swiss keeper Leonardo Genoni, who has a sparkling .946 save percentage and a tournament-leading four shutouts.
After surrendering six goals in their first two games of the tourney, Switzerland has given up just two in their last seven outings, which is astounding. In the knockout stage, it was 6-0 wins over Austria and 7-0 versus Denmark in the semis.
This will clearly be Switzerland’s toughest test, with them defeating other countries that aren’t as revered in the world stage. I’d say I wouldn’t expect the Swiss to be able to keep the States off the scoresheet, but they did do it in their first meeting of the tournament. Still, Switzerland is the underdog, since historically they aren’t a hockey powerhouse.
The penalty killing for USA has been significantly worse than their counterparts, operating at 75.0%, compared to 88.5% for the underdogs. It’s wild to think the United States hasn’t won this tournament since 1933, save for the 1960 and 1980 editions that were golds based on the Olympics replacing this event.
Despite the Swiss shutting the door on goal scoring against everyone in record fashion, I do expect both high-flying offenses to get going and light the lamp in this one to continue their goal scoring in droves.
