  • The Los Angeles Sparks are 5.5-point favorites over the Chicago Sky in WNBA action today
  • Chicago owns the worst offensive and defensive rating in the league

Two WNBA teams off to underwhelming starts face-off today in Los Angeles. The hometown Sparks (1-3) host the visiting Sky (0-2), with Chicago fresh off back-to-back humiliating losses. Online sportsbooks expect their woes to continue, pegging LA as big favorites. The action gets underway at 3 pm PT / 6 pm ET, inside the crypto.com Arena.

Chicago Sky vs Los Angeles Sparks Prediction and Picks

  • LA Sparks -5.5 (-112 at DraftKings)

I’m siding with the Sparks as well, expecting them to cover the spread. LA actually opened up as just -1.5 point favorites, but money has been flooding in non-stop, forcing the books all the way up to -5.5 as of Sunday morning.

It’s not so much that bettors are looking to buy Los Angeles, it’s that they want to fade the Sky at all costs. Chicago has dropped its first two games by a combined 60 points, which is the worst point differential in league history through two contests. The Sky is shooting only 32.4% from the floor, while opponents are knocking down over 50% of their looks.

Not surprisingly, Chicago has some of the longest WNBA Championship odds in market. The Sky rank dead last in Net Rating by more than 20 points. They also own the worst offensive and defensive rating, while their best players simply aren’t contributing enough. Angel Reese is shooting 22.7% from the field, and is fresh off an 0-of-8 performance. Turnovers have also been a major issue for Chicago, as they’re averaging 3.5 more giveaways per game than assists.

LA meanwhile, started off strong with a win over Golden State, but have since dropped three straight. The Sparks have had no problem scoring the basketball, but defensively it’s been a struggle. They’re allowing over 81 points per game, and are yielding a 42% shooting percentage from the floor.

Offensively, the team is led by Kelsey Plum who’s off to a fantastic start. She’s averaging 24 points per contest in her first season in LA. The 30-year-old is also dishing out 5 assists and racking up 3 steals per game, making her a force at both ends. Plum is a career 39% shooter from beyond the arc, and should feast versus the dreadful Sky defense.

  • Kelsey Plum 25+ Points (+110 at DraftKings)

Back to Plum, who’s my favorite target today in the player props market. She’s +110 to reach 25 points, a feat she’s already accomplished twice this season. Plum owns by far the highest usage rate on the team, and has accounted for 31% of the Sparks points so far.

I mentioned how good of a long distance shooter she is, and she’ll have ample opportunity to show off that skill today. Plum is averaging 8.5 three-point attempts per game, and will face a defense that is allowing opponents to splash 47% of their triples. If you want to boost your payout even more, consider parlaying 25+ points with 4+ threes for a cool +156 payday.
