  • [Jan 15] The Panthers (+800) and Stars (+900) remain in the mix, but the Oilers (+650) have started to create some separation as the top favorite after a 26-8-2 run since November 8th. Edmonton’s Cup odds have moved from +1000 to +650 in that span.

  • [Nov 15] The Devils (+1300) begin to slide, losing 10 of 14 games and seeing their Cup odds lengthen from +1100. Meanwhile, the surprising Capitals (+1200) continue to rise behind the league’s stingiest defense.
  • [Oct 15] The Oilers (+1000) and Hurricanes (+1100) assert themselves as early favorites. Edmonton starts strong while Carolina benefits from improved scoring depth. The defending champion Panthers open at +900.
  • [June 13]: The Florida Panthers have opened as +900 favorites to repeat as champions in 2025. Stanley Cup Favorites for 2025

The current odds for the 2025 Stanley Cup see the Edmonton Oilers as the clear-cut favorites over the rest of the league. After the Oilers, the Hurricanes and Panthers have the best chance to hoist Lord Stanley. Here is a little more information on each of the favorites:

Dallas Stars

The Stars have surged to become Cup favorites at +275 odds, largely thanks to their deadline acquisition of Mikko Rantanen from Carolina. Rantanen has been arguably the most dominant player in the playoffs, racking up 18 points in 10 postseason games, including back-to-back hat tricks.

Dallas has taken a commanding 3-1 series lead over the top-seeded Winnipeg Jets, with Jake Oettinger standing tall in net with a .929 save percentage in the series. With their balanced mix of veteran leadership and young talent, the Stars are positioned for a deep run.

Edmonton Oilers

Once again, the Oilers are legit Cup contenders, with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the way. Edmonton’s high-powered offense has them looking primed for a deep playoff run. The big question? Whether their goaltending holds up when it matters most.

Stuart Skinner may have answered some of those questions with his 23-save shutout against Vegas in Game 4, giving the Oilers a commanding 3-1 series lead. After starting the playoffs with a 0-3 record and a concerning 5.36 GAA, Skinner’s redemption could be the missing piece Edmonton needs.

Furthermore, McDavid and company are on a revenge tour after last year’s crushing Game 7 loss to Florida in the Final. After coming back from 3-0 down in the series, they fell just short on the road. Now, they’re determined to finish what they started.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes have emerged as the Eastern Conference’s biggest threat and currently sit at +325 odds to win it all. They’ve been thriving even after trading star winger Mikko Rantanen to Dallas at the trade deadline.

Carolina’s rock-solid blueline and improved scoring make them built for playoff hockey. They’ve taken a commanding 3-1 series lead over Washington after a dominant 5-2 victory in Game 4. Additionally, if Frederik Andersen stays healthy between the pipes, watch out. The 35-year-old netminder has overcome injury issues from the past two seasons and is thriving in the playoffs.

Florida Panthers

The defending champs aren’t going anywhere. Florida’s trying to become the first repeat winner since the 2016-17 Penguins. With Sergei Bobrovsky standing tall and Matthew Tkachuk doing Matthew Tkachuk things, they’ve got the swagger to go back-to-back.

The key for the Panthers? Finding that same hunger after last year’s grueling Cup run. They showed their championship DNA by closing out Edmonton in Game 7 after blowing a 3-0 series lead. That experience could be huge as they battle Toronto in a series currently tied at two games apiece.

2023 Vegas Golden Knights
2022 Colorado Avalanche
2021 Tampa Bay Lightning
2020 Tampa Bay Lightning

The Florida Panthers snagged their first-ever Stanley Cup in 2024, taking down the Edmonton Oilers in an intense seven-game showdown. The Cats jumped out to a 3-0 series lead behind Bob’s brick wall goaltending and Tkachuk’s clutch heroics. But the Oilers, powered by the dynamic duo of McDavid and Draisaitl, refused to roll over. Edmonton stormed back with three straight wins to force a winner-take-all Game 7 in Florida.

In the deciding game, Reinhart buried the game-winner to deliver the Cup to Sunrise. Bobrovsky slammed the door with a handful of impressive saves in the final minutes, cementing the Panthers’ historic victory. Florida’s triumph finally erased years of playoff disappointment and firmly established them as one of the NHL’s powerhouse franchises.

The Panthers joined the Blues (2019) and Capitals (2018) as recent first-time Cup winners. Before Florida hoisted the silver chalice, the Golden Knights ended their own Cup drought in 2023 by taking down these same Oilers.

Now the defending champs are gunning to become the first team since Crosby’s Penguins to go back-to-back. Tampa (2020-21) is the only other squad to repeat in the salary cap era, though their twin titles were bookends to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Oilers, meanwhile, are on a revenge tour after last year’s gut-wrenching Cup Final defeat. After clawing back from a 3-0 hole to force Game 7, Edmonton fell just short of completing the miracle comeback. McDavid and Draisaitl are hungry to finish what they started and end Canada’s painful championship drought.

NHL Stats for Teams Searching for Their First Stanley Cup

Team Years in the NHL Cup Final Appearances Closest They’ve Come
Vancouver Canucks 55 3 Game 7 Cup Final losses in both 2011 and 1994. No one in Vancouver will ever forget LaFayette’s post or the ensuing riots.
Buffalo Sabres 55 2 Game 6 in 1999. Losing in overtime, no thanks to Brett Hull’s foot in the crease.
San Jose Sharks 34 1 Game 6 in 2016. They’ve never been able to shed their label as chokers.
Nashville Predators 27 1 Game 6 in 2017. Nashville fans still rue the bad call on Sissons’ go-ahead goal.
Ottawa Senators 33 1 Game 5 in 2007. A heartbreaking series for Ottawa that culminated in the infamous Emery-Phillips mixup.
Seattle Kraken 3 0 The NHL’s youngest team had a respectable sophomore season, but remain a few years away from true contention.
Utah Hockey Club 1 0 The NHL’s 32nd franchise just completed their inaugural season. While not yet contenders, they showed promise and have a bright future ahead.
Arizona Coyotes 29 0 Lost in 5 games to the LA Kings in 2012. Dustin Brown isn’t admired by Glendale faithful.
Winnipeg Jets 31 0 Defeated by the Golden Knights in 5 games in 2018. Canada’s best hope was no match for Ryan Reaves’ heroics.
Minnesota Wild 25 0 Swept in the 2003 Conference Finals. Despite a disappointing playoff history, they did end Patrick Roy’s career in spectacular fashion.
Columbus Blue Jackets 25 0 The Jackets finally won their first playoff series in 2019, upsetting the top-seeded Lightning. However, the Cup remains elusive in Ohio’s capital.

The Canucks and Sabres share a painful distinction – 55 years without a Cup. Buffalo’s playoff drought has now hit 13 seasons, with their last appearance coming way back in 2011. They haven’t won a playoff round since ’07.

Vancouver’s come painfully close, dropping Game 7 heartbreakers in both ’94 and 2011. But their latest locker room drama has them trending the wrong way again.

The Sharks and Predators know the pain too, both falling just short in recent Cup Finals. Meanwhile, the Jets and Wild are still waiting for their first crack at playing for the Cup.

The new kids on the block, Utah, joined the NHL this season. While expansion teams usually take their lumps early on, Vegas showed it’s possible to contend right away by making the Final in Year 1 before winning it all in 2023. Can Utah follow that blueprint?

Canadian Stanley Cup Winners

Team Stanley Cups Finals Appearances Last Championship Last Finals Appearance
Montreal Canadiens 24 34 1993 2021
Toronto Maple Leafs 13 21 1967 1967
Edmonton Oilers 5 7 1990 2024
Calgary Flames 1 3 1989 2004
Vancouver Canucks 0 3 N/A 2011
Ottawa Senators 0 1 N/A 2007
Winnipeg Jets 0 0 N/A N/A

The Cup drought for Canadian teams hit 31 years after Florida took down Edmonton in an absolute classic seven-game series. The Oilers pushed it to the limit after being down 3-0, but couldn’t complete the miracle comeback on the road.

Montreal remains the last Canadian team to lift Lord Stanley’s mug back in ’93. Canadian teams have made it to the Final seven times since then but keep coming up empty.

Despite making up nearly 22% of the NHL, Canadian teams just can’t seem to get it done when it matters most. The odds of this drought lasting so long are mind-boggling.

Edmonton had their chance to end the misery in 2024. They fought back from the dead to force Game 7 in Florida. But the Panthers slammed the door shut on home ice, breaking Canadian hearts once again.

Now the Oilers enter 2024-25 as the favorites to finally bring the Cup back north of the border. With McDavid and Draisaitl playing some of the best hockey of their careers, this might be Canada’s best shot yet.
