  • The Houston Texans won 53-32 on Sunday to improve to 3-2.
  • Quarterback Deshaun Watson threw for a career-high 426 passing yards with five touchdowns.
  • The Texans three wins have come against teams that are a combined 5-10.

The Houston Texans won their third game in four weeks after smoking the Atlanta Falcons 53-32 on Sunday.

Their Super Bowl 54 odds were at +4100 before the win and have inched up to +2500, good for seventh-best in the league.  Are they worth a bet to win it all or is this team still a pretender?

Kansas City Chiefs +700
New Orleans Saints +900

Texans Crush Falcons on Sunday

The Texans entered Sunday as a four-point favorite over the Falcons despite coming off a disappointing 16-10 home loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 4, in which Deshaun Watson was held to 160 passing yards and no touchdowns.

This past Sunday was a completely different story.

Watson played a near perfect game as he threw for 426 yards and added 47 on the ground. He had five touchdown passes and just five incompletions (28-of-33). He finished with a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating.

The only sour spot for the Texans is that their defense was also carved up. Matt Ryan had 330 passing yards and three touchdowns as the Falcons scored 32 points. It was the second time this season the defense had given up 30 or more points.

Is Houston a Contender?

The Texans are in first place in the AFC South – they’re tied with the Indianapolis Colts – but it’s doubtful that they’re a contender. The entire division is filled with teams that are either 2-3 or 3-2. They all seem like they can earn surprise wins or unexpected losses on a weekly basis.

Of course, the freshest memory is the most vivid for many bettors when it comes to the NFL and the Texans hanging 53 on a team – even if it’s a bad one like the Falcons, who are on the cusp of firing head coach Dan Quinn – will have people eager to jump on the bandwagon.

However, it’s important to remember that the Texans were easily held in check by the Carolina Panthers two weeks ago. Their wins have come against teams who have a combined record of 5-10. Two of those wins were by razor-thin margins too because if the Jacksonville Jaguars could have converted a two-pointer, the Texans would be 2-3.

What’s the Best Bet?

Houston had a good win this week but make no mistakes about it: this is not a Super Bowl contender.

In a best-case scenario, they could be a playoff team but they won’t have a high seed. This team isn’t going on the road to New England or Kansas City and winning in January.

The Texans have a nice passing game but with questions along the offensive line, a shaky running game and a defense that isn’t consistent, I can’t trust this team to make any noise in a potential Super Bowl run.
