With his older brother now off to the Miami Dolphins and no clear path to the starting job at Alabama, Taulia Tagovailoa has entered the transfer portal and is likely leaving Tuscaloosa for greener pastures.

Could the move help vault him into the crowded race for the Heisman Trophy? It’s a long shot, but it’s possible.

Two main factors that need to be considered when deciding whether Tagovailoa’s Heisman Trophy Odds are worth betting are – where will he play, and does he have the talent to win the trophy his older brother never could?

Could Taulia Stay in the SEC?

If he really wants to stick it to Nick Saban and Alabama for passing him over yet again, why not stay in the SEC? Tennessee could use an upgrade at the position and Tagovailoa took a visit to meet with former Alabama assistant and current Volunteers head coach Jeremy Pruitt.

Taulia stuck with his commitment to the Crimson Tide coming out of high school but with his recruitment seemingly back open, maybe Pruitt will be able to get his guy this time around.

Another rumored option for Taulia is the Maryland Terrapins. While Tennessee could offer him an opportunity to compete for a big time bowl game, Maryland most likely does not.

Terrapins head coach Mike Locksley was his original OC at Alabama, so the ties are there, but this would definitely be a waiving of the white flag. The Terrapins are at best a 10th place team in the Big 10 and are not the type of program that produces Heisman winners.

Taulia Doesn’t Have the Talent of Tua

Let’s assume for the sake of argument Tagovailoa ends up with a starting job at a quality program. Would he have the ability to rack up the stats needed to win a Heisman? That seems unlikely.

He’s a former 4-star recruit who could never climb above 3rd on the Alabama depth chart.

He’s undersized at 5’11 and doesn’t have a track record of putting up big numbers. He attempted 12 passes last season for a total of 100 yards. There’s been no talk of him as an NFL prospect and as we’ve seen with the recent selections of QB’s Joe Burrow and Kyler Murray, the winners of the Heisman aren’t only NFL prospects but first overall selections.

Who Offers Better Bang For Your Buck?

It Taulia didn’t share a last name with his older brother, he wouldn’t appear on this list at all. The +6000 odds may look enticing but I’d pass on them and instead look for value with the favorites.

The odds of the top dogs always look more appealing before the ball is snapped, so I’d focus on Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields. The pair are big time talents, likely the top two picks in the next NFL draft and both have shown what it takes to win the award.

If you’re looking for a long shot further down the board, take a look at RB Chuba Hubbard from Oklahoma State. The Canadian ran for 2,094 yards and 21 touchdowns last year. If he improves on those numbers, he could absolutely receive an invite to the award ceremony despite +2050 odds.
