- Stefanos Tsitsipas is the -334 favorite over Casper Ruud in their men’s singles quarterfinal at the ATP National Bank Open on Friday, August 13
- The Greek player beat Olympic silver medalist Karen Khachanov in the round of 16
- Ruud won his only previous meeting with Tsitsipas earlier this year
It’s a safe bet to assume that Stefanos Tsitsipas enjoyed spending his 23rd birthday in Canada much more than when he turned 20 in the country.
On Wednesday, the Greek star dispatched Olympic silver medalist Karen Khachanov in the round of 16 at the ATP National Bank Open as he turned 23. Tsitsipas played in the final of the same tournament on his 20th birthday and lost to Rafael Nadal.
If he intends a return trip to the final, the next stumbling block in the path of Tsitsipas is Norway’s Casper Ruud. They will meet in Thursday’s quarterfinals. World #3 Tsitsipas is the -334 favorite to overcome Ruud and march onward to the semifinals.

A Very Happy Birthday
There was cake. He was serenaded in song. Most importantly of all, there was a victory.
Tsitipas dispatched Khachanov 6-3, 6-2, requiring just one hour and 19 minutes to get the job done. Tsitsipas is now 4-0 all-time against world #28 Khachanov of Russia.
The Greek player attacked the match effectively, stapling Khachanov to the baseline. Tsitsipas kept the tempo of the match at a high level, a style that Khachanov prefers not to play.

Tsitsipas saved both break points he faced. He struggled with his first serve, getting just 50% to land. However, when they were in, he capitalized effectively. Tsitstipas won 93% of first-service points. That was well above his season average of 74% won.
Tsitsipas opened this tournament with a victory over France’s Ugo Humbert. It was Humbert who bounced Tsitsipas out of the Tokyo Olympic tennis tournament.
Ruud Awakening
The renaissance of Ruud’s career continues to be upward in motion. He’s won his past three tournaments -at Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel – and is 37-9 for the 2021 season.
The Norwegian has climbed to a personal best world ranking of #12. He is the first player since Andy Murray in October of 2011 to win three titles in three consecutive weeks. Ruud, who also captured the Gonet Geneva Open crown in May. He defeated Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the final there.
The sixth-seeded Ruud made short work of 2019 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters finalist Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-4 6-3 to win his 13th consecutive match. The Norwegian’s service game dominated the first set. He ended up winning 20 of his 22 service points and 100% of his second-serve points.

He won all three break points offered by Lakovic. As well, Ruud won 80% of his second service points during the match. He also smacked five aces.
Ruud will be playing in his 11th ATP Tour tournament quarterfinal this year. He is still seeking his first ATP Masters 1000 title. He currently holds down the eighth and final spot in the ATP race to Turin.
Norwegian Holds Advantage
For all he’s accomplished already on a tennis court, Tsitsipas remains the second-youngest player ranked among the ATP top 10. However, among the things that the #3 seed in this event hasn’t accomplished is the posting of a victory over Ruud.
Casper Ruud:
– 13 consecutive wins (+ one walkover)
– 1st M1000 QF on hardcourts
Should be a good one vs Tsitsipas tomorrow, beat him in Madrid (the only clay event where Stef lost before the QFs in 2021)

Granted, they’ve only met once. That was earlier this year in Madrid. It finished up in a 7-6, 6-4 straight set victory for the Norwegian.

Even with his standing as world #3, Tsitsipas is still prone to occasional bouts of inconsistency. Currently, no player is more in form than Ruud. Back the hot hand to pull off the upset.
Pick: Casper Ruud (+250); Ruud 2-1 (+650)
