  • The Los Angeles Dodgers are -130 road favorites over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night
  • Dodgers lefty Julio Urias (13-3, 3.29) and Yu Darvish (7-7, 3.70) are the probable starters
  • Odds and analysis can be found below with a prediction

With a new pitching coach in tow, the freefalling San Diego Padres will host the Los Angeles Dodgers at 10:10 pm ET, Tuesday, in the opener of a three-game series at Petco Park.

The Padres (68-58) fired Larry Rothschild on Monday’s off day and replaced him with bullpen coach Ben Fritz. San Diego has lost five of its last six games and nine of its last 11, falling 13 games behind the division-leading San Francisco Giants in the National League West and one game back of the Cincinnati Reds for the second Wild Card.

The Dodgers (78-47) had their nine-game winning streak stopped Sunday with a 7-2 loss to the New York Mets at home but are favored Tuesday. It was just the third loss in 16 games for Los Angeles, which has a 9.5-game lead for the first Wild Card and is trailing the Giants by 2.5 games in the division standings.

Dodgers vs Padres Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Los Angeles Dodgers -130 -1.5 (+135) Over 8 (-110)
San Diego Padres +110 +1.5 (-155) Under 8 (-110)

Odds as of August 24th at DraftKings.

The Dodgers were -130 on the opening moneyline and that number has held steady. It is expected to be a hazy night in San Diego with the forecast calling for a gametime temperature of 73 degrees and wind from the north at 5 mph.

Probable Pitchers

Both expected starters will be coming off the injured list as Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias (13-3, 3.29) opposes Yu Darvish (7-7, 3.70)

Urias has been out 10 days with a bruised left calf that he sustained when hit by a pitch in his previous start against the New York Mets on Aug. 13 in Los Angeles. Urias was forced for the game after pitching five scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks and striking out five.

Urias vs Darvish

Julio Urias
VS
Yu Darvish
13-3 Record 7-7
3.29 ERA 3.70
3.47 xERA 3.12
1.06 WHIP 1.02
4.97 SO/W 5.27

Urias hasn’t lost since June 21 when he gave up six runs in four innings in a loss to the Padres at Dodger Stadium. That also happened to be the last time Darvish won as he allowed one run in six innings.

Since his taking his last loss, Urias has gone 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA in nine starts. The Dodgers are 18-6 in his 24 starts this season and he has recorded 10 quality starts.

Urias is having such a good season that he’ll be immortalized with a bobblehead.

Urias has a 10-2 record with a 2.88 ERA in 14 road starts. In 15 starts at night, he is 6-2 with a 3.74 ERA.

Urias will be facing the Padres for the second time this season. He has a 1-1 career mark against San Diego with a 3.86 ERA in nine games (four starts) and is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in four games (two starts) at Petco Park.

Darvish has been sidelined with lower back tightness since getting tagged for five runs in 2.2 innings by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 12 in a road loss. He yielded six hits while striking out four and walking one.

Darvish is 0-5 with a 6.31 ERA in eight starts since his last win. He has had 12 quality starts in 23 outings this season and the Padres are 15-8 when he pitches.

At Petco Park, Darvish has a 5-3 record and a 3.11 ERA in 14 starts. He is 6-4 with a 3.53 ERA in 13 nighttime starts.

Darvish is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers this season and 2-1 with a 1.33 ERA in four career games.

Devilish Time with Darvish

Few Dodgers hitters have had much success against Darvish, including third baseman Justin Turner and left AJ Pollock, who are both 1 for 11. Turner has struck out eight times and Pollock has five punchouts.

Wil Myers .182
Adam Frazier .167
Eric Hosmer .125
Fernando Tatis Jr. .125
Trent Grisham .000
Ha-Seong Kim .000
Jake Marisnick .000

Shortstop Corey Seager is hitless in six at-bats against Darvish but has been swinging the bat well in 21 games since coming off the injured list July 30. He is hitting .303 (23 for 76) with seven doubles, two home runs, and 10 RBIs.

Padres third baseman Manny Machado is 4 for 12 with a home run against Urias. However, right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. is 1 for 8 with three strikeouts.

Dodgers vs Padres Pick

The Padres are 7-3 against the Dodgers this season, including 5-2 in San Diego. In the teams’ last meeting, the Padres swept a three-game series from June 21-23 at Petco Park.

Tatis has belted seven home runs against the Dodgers this season and shortstop Jake Cronenworth has gone deep four times. Dodgers second baseman Trea Turner has hit .345 (10 for 29) against the Padres with one double and three homers, though those statistics were compiled while he was still with the Washington Nationals.

That sweep in June feels like it happened two years ago rather than two months. These are clearly teams headed in opposite directions.

The Pick: Dodgers moneyline (-130)
