No Kristaps, No Kidd
Dallas will be short-handed in its only visit to New York this season. Forward Kristaps Porzingis remains in the league’s health and safety protocols and will not be available for a reunion at Madison Square Garden, and forward Willie Cauley-Stein will miss the game because of personal reasons, the Mavericks announced.
It’s double-vote day so let’s get Kristaps Porzingis into the top 10, because he deserves it.

Mavs coach Jason Kidd will miss his third straight game while in the health and safety protocols, with acting coach Sean Sweeney again taking over. Knicks’ guard Kemba Walker has missed the last six games with a knee injury and is questionable.
Porzingis, the Knicks’ first-round selection in the 2015 draft, is averaging 20.6 points and 8.0 rebounds in 26 games this season. He has missed 14 games because of toe and knee injuries and COVID-19.
Luka’s Big Return
Dallas’s Luka Doncic returned to the lineup in a big way Sunday, with his third triple-double of the season and the 39th of his career in a 112-99 home victory over Chicago the last time out. He had 22 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists.
Doncic had missed 11 of the previous 15 games while dealing with a right ankle injury, although he has played four of five since a Jan. 2 victory at Oklahoma City, missing only a victory at Houston last Friday.
Doncic has averaged 20.8 points, 11.8 assists and 9.5 rebounds since returning against Oklahoma City. He is averaging 25.6 points per game, which would be 11th in the league if he had enough games to qualify. His 7.9 assists would be seventh. He has the most triple-doubles in league history among players age 22 or younger.
Barrett Steps Up
RJ Barrett, who beat Boston with a buzzer-beating banked three-pointer last Thursday, has continued his roll with 50 points in the last two games while helping navigate the Knicks’ offense through Julius Randle’s dry spell.

Barrett had 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting in an 111-96 home victory over San Antonio Monday. He made three of four three-point attempts against the Spurs and has made 7-of-13 threes in the last two games, beginning with a 99-75 return match loss at Boston.
Barrett, Evan Fournier and others have helped carry the load while Julius Randle struggles to find the form he showed last season. Last year, he averaged a career-high 24.1 points per game that landed him a four-year, $117 million contract extension that kicks in next year.
Randle is averaging 19.2 points and is shooting a career-low 41.6% from the field.
Knicks win but Julius Randle situation only gets worse. His night ended with a frustration foul and a beeline to the bench, with the crowd booing and then chanting for his replacement, Obi Toppin.
Randle scored just two points. It was his lowest output as a Knick.

Randle had two points in 31 minutes against the Spurs, with three assists and 12 rebounds. He has scored in single digits in two of the last five games and has made 34-of-97 field goal attempts (35.1%) in his last six.
Randle made a thumbs-down gesture to the home fans last Thursday that he said meant “shut the f*** up.” The NBA fined him $25,000 for egregious use of profane language for a different statement in a press conference after that game.
Fournier returned from a one-game absence because of a thigh injury to score 18 against San Antonio. He had 41 against Boston last Thursday.
By the Numbers
The road team has won seven of the last eight games in the series, and Dallas has won 14 of the last 19 at Madison Square Garden. The road team won and covered both games last season, the first time they had met since 2019.
Dallas is 12-9 ATS on the road, 6-3 as a road favorite. New York is 9-12 ATS at home, 1-4 as a home underdog.
Dallas has held six of its last seven opponents under 100 points.
The Knicks have not beaten a team with a winning record since a 106-100 home victory over the LeBron-less Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 23, and there is no reason to believe that will start now, against a hot Dallas team with Doncic in the lineup.
The pick: Dallas -2.5 (-110)
