At 20, Jannik Sinner has already been in the top 10, and will be back there at the end of this Australian Open.

But his experience in Grand Slam tournaments is limited, and even more limited at the busy end of them.

So even though he’s only 23, Stefanos Tsitsipas has a huge edge as the two meet in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

However, Sinner is still listed as the -150 in the Australian Open odds.

Troubled Trajectory for Tsitsipas

The world No. 4 had a star-crossed off-season before flying to Australia.

An elbow issue that had plagued him for a big chunk of 2021 was finally addressed in the offseason, which came fairly late for players like the Greek star who qualified for the year-end finals.

So in essence, he didn’t really have an off-season. And it has taken him the matches at ATP Cup and in the first week at Melbourne Park to play his way into form.

Tsitsipas lost two sets in his first three rounds, both tiebreaks. But when he ran into No. 24 seed Taylor Fritz in the fourth round, he was in big trouble.

Down two sets to one, he managed to eke out a five-set win during a late-night marathon Monday. But it took a lot out of him.

Which might be one reason Sinner is a slight favorite.

Sinner Fresh and Ready

For Jannik Sinner, it’s been a much easier road, with arguably a slightly less formidable draw.

In four matches, the Italian has only lost one set – an almost random 6-1 went to qualifier Taro Daniel in the second round.

He has expended significantly less energy and comes in with far fresher legs.

But looking for his first Grand Slam semifinal at his tender age remains a rather daunting prospect. Not to mention joining countryman Matteo Berrettini to own half the final-four spots.

Sinner does have the luck of the butterfly, which worked well for Naomi Osaka a year ago.

But he’ll need more than that.

More Weapons for Tsitsipas

What Sinner does, he does extremely well. But he hasn’t yet developed all of the weapons he might have down the road.

Most players who have faced him will tell you that he’s amongst the hardest hitters in the game. And yet, his style is so light and effortful it doesn’t even appear to take a toll on him.

Tsitsipas has a more varied tool kit. And he has shown in this tournament (finally) that he is increasing his willingness to finish points off at the net.

He did it plenty as a junior but, like many of the younger pros, sort of left it on the side of the court for the first few years of his career.

A year ago, Tsitsipas pulled off a monumental win over Rafael Nadal in the quarters (but it took everything he had). This tast feels a lot more doable for him.

These two have only met on clay, which is natural surface for the Italian and perhaps (at the moment), the best surface for Tsitsipas.

It’s scheduled to be another hot, steamy day (perhaps even more humid) in Melbourne. And we’ve seen the toll it’s taken on many of the players. Sinner has seemed impervious so far, but even a 20-year-old has his limits.
