A blockbuster match has been set, with former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka taking on the incoming World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the finals of the Miami Open. The two are set to take to the court at 11 am ET.
Now, Swiatek has been the favorite to win the tournament since the beginning, so it’s no surprise she favored to win this match.
But both players are dialed in, and have been played high-quality tennis over the past two weeks. Expect this to be an exciting match.

Even though Swiatek been near perfect this tournament, she understands what Osaka is capable off, and knows she’s been in her position before. Could Osaka breakthrough to not only end Swiatek’s streak but win her first title since the 2021 Australian Open?

Is Osaka back? It’s sure looking like it.

The 24-year old book her spot in the finals after coming back from a set down to defeat 22nd seed Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, recording 18 aces in the process.
The dropped set in the beginning of the match is her first of the tournament, and she didn’t show any signs of loss of composure. The Japanese star knew what she had to do, and managed to execute the following two sets almost perfectly.
Osaka ended her 2021 season early, and entered the 2022 Australian Open as the defending champion. Unfortunately she was knocked out in the third round, and then didn’t compete in a tournament until Indian Wells a few months later.
In California she was then once again knocked out fairly early in the second round. But it’s been here in Miami that she has seemed to find her footing again, and showing signs of why she was once ranked at the top.
Swiatek’s 16-Match Win Streak
With her semifinal win over Jessica Pegula, Swiatek remains undefeated at 2022 WTA 1000 events. She defeated Pegula 6-2, 7-5.
The Pole breezed through her first set, but it was the second set that found her on her heels at times. She was down a break early on, but managed to then win two match points at 5-4, and secure the win shortly after.
The 20-year old is without question the best player on tour right now. She’s had an incredible year so far, coming into Miami with a 20-3 record, and has since won a tour leading 25 wins on the year.
In her third straight WTA 1000 final and first Miami Open final, she’ll take on Osaka who is bound to put up a fight.
Osaka and Swiatek’s Second Meeting
This is only the second meeting between the two, with Osaka holding the 1-0 head-to-head record. The two’s one and only meeting came in 2019 during the Round of 16 in Toronto, in what felt like the Osaka era. The second seed, Osaka went on to win the match in straight sets.

It’s worth noting that since that match quite a few things have changed. Osaka worked to find a balance with tennis, which led her to step away for periods of time, and Swiatek has come into her own. During that time Osaka and Ashleigh Barty would go back and forth for the No. 1 slot, whereas Swiatek was just starting to make a name for herself.

Where’s the Best Bet?
Swiatek will be looking to avenge that loss to Osaka in 2019, as the tables have slightly turned. She’s also one step closer to becoming part of the rare Sunshine Double Club, winning Indian Wells and the Miami Open in the same season.
This match could really go either way, but there are some factors that lend itself more to one player at times. Osaka spoke to Swiatek’s athleticism thinking back to their match in 2019. And it’s true, Swiatek covers more of the court than the 24-year old. However, fatigue could start to play a factor. Swiatek has played a lot of matches in the past couple of weeks, and we saw it start to catch up to her a bit in her semifinal match.
Osaka has the edge when it comes to serving, and she won’t be holding anything back. Swiatek is good on the return, but with Osaka coming off a 18 aces match, expected the Japanese to come out strong.
But again, regardless of the winner here, look for the match to go the distance.
