Super Bowl Coin Toss Odds, Results, Betting History & Trends – Heads or Tails for Every Year

Every single Super Bowl has started with a coin toss to determine who will get the ball to start the game and which half of the field belongs to each team. Betting on that coin toss is still a somewhat new thing, however. Since it has become available it has quickly turned into one of the more popular and interesting Super Bowl props.
As the only true 50-50 proposition you can find, sportsbooks also charge a lot less juice on the coin toss, with one sportsbook charging none. You could find either “heads” or “tails” available at +100 odds at bet365 for the 2026 Super Bowl between the Seahawks and Patriots. For comparison, a game between two evenly matched teams generally sees -110 odds offered on each side to win.
As a result, this prop draws the attention of all types of sports bettors. One bettor reportedly placed a $5,000 bet on the Super Bowl 55 coin toss, siding with heads for a $9,850 return.
I have collected all the coin toss results from past Super Bowls, and also looked into how often the team who wins the coin toss goes on to win the game.

Super Bowl 60 sees the Seattle Seahawks vs New England Patriots on Sunday, February 8 with kickoff scheduled for 6:30pm ET. Shawn Smith is the head referee for the game and will therefore have the honor of flipping the coin. The Seattle Seahawks will get to call the coin toss in the 2026 Super Bowl, as it is the NFC’s year to be the visiting team.
When these two teams met in Super Bowl 49, the Patriots were the away team and got to call the toss. They called heads, but it came up tails, giving the Seahawks the win.
Per theScore Bet, the public money is currently on Tails. Looking at the action they have taken on the coin toss, 56.3% of bets and 56.1% of handle is on Tails.
Patriots Coin Toss Results This Season
I used bold font in the table above to signal when the Patriots had the decision (won the toss) and italics when their opponent won the toss and got to choose how they start the game.
The Patriots went 8-9 on coin tosses during the regular season, but lost six of the last seven. When the Patriots’ opponent got to call the toss, when New England was the home team, as they will be in Super Bowl 60, they went 4-5 on tosses.
When New England won the toss, they elected to “defer” seven of the eight times, opting to receive the kick and start on offense once – this came in Week 3 against the Steelers. When the Patriots’ opponent won the toss, they ended up receiving (their opponent “deferred”) in eight of nine instances – the lone exception was the Jets taking the ball in Week 11.
Seahawks Coin Toss Results This Season
When the decision column cells in the table above are bolded, it means Seattle made the decision, since they won the toss. When the cell is italicized, their opponent won the toss and got to choose.
The Seahawks went 9-8 on coin tosses in the regular season, but won six of their last eight. When Seattle got to call the toss, in games where they were the away team, as they will be in Super Bowl 60, they went 5-4.
They decided to “defer” all nine times they won the toss. When their opponent won the toss, they ended up receiving the ball five times (their opponent decided to defer), but three teams elected to take the ball first and put Seattle’s defense on the field to open the game – those teams were the Jaguars, Commanders, and Colts.

One of the most popular Super Bowl coin toss trends comes around whether the team who wins the toss wins the game as well. But here’s some more on coin toss trends below:
Super Bowl Coin Toss Trends
Here are a handful of trends we’ve unearthed from the Super Bowl coin toss results:
- The coin toss has been Tails in eight of the last 12 Super Bowls
- Three of the last four Super Bowls played outdoors have resulted in the coin toss being tails
- The team who won the coin toss has lost the Super Bowl in nine of the last 11 years, and is 26-33 all-time
- The Cowboys hold the record for most Super Bowl coin toss wins with five
Now here’s a look at the heads/tails results.
Heads vs Tails Records in Super Bowls
| Heads/Tails | All-Time Record | All-Time Win% | Record in Last 10 | Win% in Last 10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heads | 28-31 | 47.5% | 4-6 | 40% |
| Tails | 31-28 | 52.5% | 6-4 | 60% |
Even though the probability of each outcome (heads or tails) is split 50-50, the actual outcomes slightly favor tails right now thanks to the recent trend. After Super Bowl 48, we were tied 24-24. Tails has just rarely failed lately.
Tails currently holds the advantage with a 31-28 record over heads. That means tails has happened in 52.5% of Super Bowl coin tosses.
