Raise your hand if you had the Cubs (12-7, 6-5 home) leading the NL in scoring through the first 20+ games of the season. Chicago’s lineup has been on a tear, and put on an offensive clinic on Friday en route to a 13-0 victory over the Dodgers.
The two sides meet again on Saturday, for the third game of their four-game set, but online sportsbooks are shying away from Chicago in the MLB odds. They’ve pegged LA as the favorite for this tilt, as the Dodgers (10-11, 4-5 away) try to get back to the .500 mark.

Los Angeles vs Chicago Probable Pitchers
LA enters play with the fifth shortest World Series odds, in spite of their underwhelming start through 21 games.
They’ll turn to Dustin May on Saturday, as he’ll look to bounce back from a terrible start. May was shelled by the Mets for five runs on eight hits, including a homer, in his last outing, after starting the season with three solid performances.
He began the year by allowing just three runs over 18.1 innings, but simply didn’t have his best stuff against New York. He’s got minimal history versus the Cubs regulars in the MLB lineups, but suffice to say he’ll have his hands full with how Chicago is swinging the bats.
May vs Wesneski Stats
1-1 | Record | 1-0 |
3.00 | ERA | 6.23 |
0.92 | WHIP | 1.77 |
.179 | OBA | .321 |
1.9 | SO/W Ratio | 1.8 |
Chicago will counter with Hayden Wesneski, and his poor start is likely one of the reasons oddsmakers are down on the Cubs on Saturday. Wesneski coughed up 10 runs through his first two starts, failing to make it out of the 2nd inning in one of those outings.
He did rebound nicely in his latest start at Oakland, completing neutralizing the lowly A’s. Wesneski threw 7 innings of one run ball, allowing only five hits, while striking out seven. That’s much more like the form we saw when he came onto the scene in 2022, as he posted a 2.18 ERA and 0.94 WHIP, with 33 strikeouts in 33 innings of work.
Dodgers vs Cubs Betting Stats
Fortunately for Wesneski, he’s catching the Dodgers bats at the right time. LA mustered just one baserunner on Friday versus Drew Smyly, breaking up his bid for a perfect game with an infield single in the 8th inning.
LA enters play averaging less than four runs per game over the last week, while batting only .218 during that stretch. They’ve dropped four of their past six overall, and have been outscored 27-12 in five games so far this year against the Cubs.

Chicago on the other hand, has had no issue crossing the plate. They’re averaging six runs per game, and own the NL’s top average (.282) and second highest OBP (.350). It’s one thing to get runners on base, but the Cubs have done an excellent job cashing them in. They’re slashing .312/.371/.441 with runners in scoring position so far this season, and .303/.374/.455 in high leverage situations.
Chicago has won five of their last six overall and feature baseball’s top home run producer Patrick Wisdom (9 HR). as well as Nico Hoerner who boasts baseball’s fifth best average (.365).

Dodgers vs Cubs Predictions
The Cubs have outscored their opponents 34-15 during this most recent six game stretch, scoring in double figures three times. They’ve crossed the plate at least 10 times in six of their first 19 outings so far this season, matching the 1885 Chicago White Stockings as the only other team in history to accomplish the feat.
Dodgers vs Cubs 2023 H2H Results
Date | Away Team | Home Team | Result |
---|---|---|---|
April 21 | Dodgers | Cubs | CHC, 13-0 |
April 20 | Dodgers | Cubs | LAD, 6-2 |
April 16 | Cubs | Dodgers | CHC, 3-2 |
April 15 | Cubs | Dodgers | LAD, 2-1 |
April 14 | Cubs | Dodgers | CHC, 8-2 |
Not only has their offense been humming, but the pitching has been solid as well. They’ve limited enemy bats to two runs or less in five of their past six games, with two shutouts. Wesneski’s latest start brings optimism that he’s about to turn his season around, while the Dodgers recent form isn’t scaring anyone.
Even if Wesneski does struggle, Chicago’s bullpen has been reliable. They own a league best 11.1 K/9 rate and a 3.88 ERA. Much better than the 8.8 K/9 mark and 4.55 ERA of the Dodgers pen.
Pick: Chicago Cubs Moneyline (+124)
