Raise your hand if you had the Pirates (16-7, 7-3 home) atop the National League standings after 23 games in your MLB projections. I’m going to go out on a limb and assume no hands are in the air, but nevertheless that’s the state of the NL heading into Tuesday’s action.
Pittsburgh has won seven straight and nine of 11 entering play against the Dodgers (12-11, 6-5 away), but despite the Pirates torrid start they’re getting no love in the MLB odds.

The World Series odds meanwhile, aren’t showing Pittsburgh much respect either. The Pirates are 200-1 to win the title, which is the seventh longest price in baseball. LA is +850, which represents the fourth shortest odds in MLB.
The Dodgers will give the ball to Noah Syndergaard on Tuesday, who hasn’t exactly impressed his new club. Thor is 0-3 through four starts, allowing 12 runs in 22 innings. He’s been taken deep four times in is last three starts and has a rocky past with the Pirates batters in the MLB starting lineups.
Current Pittsburgh hitters are batting .316 off Syndergaard over 38 at-bats, with a .447 slugging percentage and an .813 OPS.

The Pirates will counter with Johan Oviedo, who’s pitched like anything but a number five starter. Oviedo has allowed one run or less in three straight outings, tossing at least 6 innings in each of those starts.
He’s fresh off holding the Rockies to three hits and one run at Coors Field, and boasts a 21-to-4 strikeout-to-walk rate over his last three outings.
The Cuban righty doesn’t have much history against the Dodgers, facing current LA batters a total of 12 times. He’s coughed up only three hits during those at-bats, but shutting down the high powered Dodgers will be no easy task.

LA’s underwhelming 12-11 start is not a reflection of their offense. The Dodgers are averaging the second most runs in the National League at 5.26, and are fresh off crossing the plate 16 times in the final two games of their series with the Cubs.

LA’s lineup is littered with contenders in the NL MVP odds, and have hit 10 more home runs than anyone else in the NL. Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, James Outman and J.D. Martinez’s bats are all a big reason for the power surge, but no one’s bat has been more potent than Max Muncy’s.
Muncy leads MLB in homers with 11, after smacking five last week, to go along with seven RBi and a .389 average. Luckily for Pittsburgh, Muncy has just been placed on the paternity list, giving Oviedo one less masher to deal with.
As for the Pirates, they check in with the National League’s fourth highest scoring lineup. The boast a top-four OPS and lead the NL in steals. They’ve been one of the most clutch teams in baseball so far, slashing .284/.369/.459 with runners in scoring position.

As good as the hitting has been, their pitching certainly deserves credit as well. Pittsburgh boasts the NL’s third best team ERA, and is yielding less than four runs per contest.
Dodgers vs Pirates Predictions
The caveat to those great numbers is that they’ve played an incredibly soft schedule so far. 10 of their 23 games have come against the Reds and Rockies, who boast the NL’s two worst records. Only three of their 23 contests have come against opponents with a record above .500, and they dropped two of those three yielding 19 runs in the process.

Still, you can only beat who’s on your schedule. They’ve produced well enough at the plate that bettors should feel confident they can keep up with the potent Dodger bats.
Expect Pittsburgh’s pitching to experience some regression, and for this game to produce plenty of scoring. Play over 8 runs.
