Happy Justin Steele day everyone. The Cubs lefty has been must see tv all season, and on Wednesday he’ll take on the Cardinals looking to continue his perfect season.

Oddsmakers aren’t as bullish on his chances as you might expect in the MLB odds, as they’ve opened both teams with identical -108 moneyline odds. That’s partly because Chicago is currently in the midst of its worst stretch of baseball this season, dropping eight of its past 11.

Cardinals vs Cubs Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
St. Louis Cardinals -108 -1.5 (+146) O 8 (-110)
Chicago Cubs -108 -1.5 (-178) U 8 (-110)

The Cardinals are actually getting more respect in the runline market. St. Louis is laying 1.5 runs at plus-money, in a contest with a total of 8. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 pm ET at Wrigley Field in Chicago, IL, with clear skies and 64 degree game-time temperatures on deck.

St. Louis vs Chicago Probable Pitchers

Steele enters Wednesday leading the National League in ERA (1.45) and WAR, while ranking second in wins (5) and fifth in WHIP (0.95). He doesn’t have the same type of strikeout pedigree as the top contenders in the NL Cy Young odds, but still finds himself with the fifth shortest price tag at +2200.

Steele is fresh off 7 innings of one run ball versus the Marlins, which marked the seventh straight start he’s allowed two earned runs or less in. He’s yet to surrender more than seven hits this season, and he hasn’t coughed up more than a single run in any of his four home starts.

In two of those home starts he blanked the Padres and Brewers, while he also owns a dominating victory over the Dodgers.

If there’s a reason for concern it’s that the St. Louis regulars in the MLB starting lineups have fared quite well against him in the past. Current Cardinal batters are hitting .355 off Steele over 31 at-bats, with last year’s NL MVP odds champion Paul Goldschmidt owning a home run and three hits in seven plate appearances.

Montgomery vs Steele Stats

1.22 WHIP 0.95
.250 OBA .200
4.2 SO/W Ratio 3.3

St. Louis meanwhile, will counter with Jordan Montgomery. The lefty has pitched very well over his past three starts, allowing two runs or less in each outing. Last time out, he held the Tigers to two runs over 6 innings, while striking out six.

His previous start was a 6.2 inning gem versus the Dodgers, where he limited the mighty LA bats to a single run while fanning seven.

Montgomery has plenty of history with the Cubs lineup, garnering favorable results. He’s held Chicago batters to a .220/.268/.308 slash line over 90 at-bats, with an 18-to-6 strikeout-to-walk rate.

Cardinals vs Cubs Predictions

It’s not hard to envision Montgomery’s strong form not continuing versus the Cubs, as the Chicago lineup has been dreadful lately. The Cubs are batting .222 over the past seven days, averaging just 2.6 runs per game. They managed only five hits and a single run in the series opener versus the Cardinals, leaving nine runners on base.

Clutch hitting has been a major issue for Chicago all season, as they’re batting a measly .194 with two-outs and runners in scoring position. That type of withering under pressure is the recipe for losing games, and also for low scoring affairs. The Cubs are 20-14-1 to the under this season, with eight of their last nine games falling short of the total entering play on Wednesday.

Low scoring games are especially common when Steele is on the mound. Dating back to last year, nine of his past 13 outings have produced a total below eight.

As for the St. Louis bats, yes they’ve had success versus Steele in the past, but that was in his rookie season. The last time they faced the Cubs ace in 2022, he held them to one earned run over 7 innings.

The Cardinals lineup is heavy on talent with the likes of Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, but the way Steele is pitching I’m willing to bet he can keep even them in check.

Pick: Under 8 (-110)
