Has Shohei Ohtani played his final game as an Angel? The odds suggest no, and if baseball’s best player isn’t dealt before Tuesday, you can expect to see him in LA’s lineup when they square off with Detroit.
Despite the likely presence of Ohtani, the Angles (51-49, 22-26 away) aren’t getting a ton of respect in the MLB odds. Online sportsbooks have pegged the Tigers (46-54, 22-27 home) as the small home chalk in the first meeting of the season between these two clubs.
Angels vs Tigers Odds
Team | Moneyline | Runline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
LA Angels | +105 | -1.5 (+170) | O 8 (-120) |
Detroit Tigers | -125 | +1.5 (-200) | U 8 (+100) |
Detroit is currently a -125 moneyline favorite, although LA does get the advantage in the runline odds. The contest features a total of 8, with the first pitch is scheduled for 6:40 pm ET at Comerica Park, in Detroit, MI. A perfect evening for baseball is currently in the forecast, with clear skies and 86 degree temperatures on deck.

Los Angeles vs Detroit Starting Pitchers
Neither club is considered a serious contender in the World Series odds, although the Angles strong recent form has put them back in the Wild Card conversation.
They’ll give the ball to Griffin Canning, who’s fresh off a season-high 12 strikeout performance against the Yankees. Canning scattered six hits and two runs over 5.2 innings versus New York, but didn’t factor into the decision.
His previous two outings were far less impressive however, as he was smacked around by the Dodgers and D-Backs. On the bright side, Canning was excellent in the month of June, and has the luxury of facing a very underwhelming Tigers lineup – more on that later.
He pitched very well versus Detroit in his only two meetings with them back in 2019, holding Tiger batters to a .186 average. That version of the team looks nothing like the current iteration however, with only Miguel Cabrera and Jake Rogers remaining.
Canning vs Rodriguez Stats
6-4 | Record | 6-5 |
4.52 | ERA | 2.69 |
1.23 | WHIP | 0.97 |
.240 | OBA | .207 |
3.3 | SO/W Ratio | 4.9 |
Detroit will counter with ace Eduardo Rodriguez. The former Red Sox hurler has looked like a legitimate AL Cy Young odds contender for the bulk of the season, yielding two runs or less in 10 of 14 starts. He’s among the league leaders in WHIP in 2023, and is on pace to set career bests in that category as well as ERA.

Like Ohtani, Rodriguez has been the subject of many trade rumors recently, and there’s a chance he’s dealt prior to Tuesday’s start as well. If not, he’ll look to continue his dominance over the LA regulars in the MLB starting lineups. Current Angels hitters are batting just .229 against Rodriguez over 48 at-bats, with a 23% strikeout rate.
Angels vs Tigers Predictions
Rodriguez has whiffed Ohtani five times in 10 career at-bats, although the runaway favorite in the AL MVP odds has taken him deep once.
No player in MLB has more home runs than Ohtani (36), and the long ball has been the Angles primary source of offense since the All-Star Break. LA has smacked a league-high 20 home runs over that stretch, which has helped them average north of six runs per game. They’re 6-3 since the break, with five wins in their last six outings.

Only the Red Sox and Twins have a higher slugging percentage than the Angels during the second half of the season, while LA ranks fourth in wOBA in the past nine games. Both Ohtani and Luis Rengifo have gone deep four times during this run, with Taylor Ward and Mike Moustakas hitting three homers apiece.
LA’s recent success at the plate should make life difficult for Rodriguez, especially since the Angel bats have performed better on the road and against lefties this season. That’s going to force Detroit to put up some offense of its own, something they’ve struggled with this season.
The Tigers rank 28th in scoring, and 29th in slugging and OPS. They’re slashing a dismal .225/.283/.372 over the last two weeks, but they do feature one player who’s been tearing the cover off the ball.
That would be Spencer Torkelson. The team leader in home runs and RBI’s has gone deep three times in the last week, while driving in seven runs. His .950 OPS is miles ahead of any other Detroit hitter during that stretch, and the 23-year-old is on pace to be the team’s only 20-homer man this season.
Pick: LA Angels Moneyline (+105)
