No. 3 Purdue (22-3, 12-3 Big Ten) is a 1.5-point road favorite at Maryland in a Big Ten game at 6:30 pm ET Thursday on the Big Ten Network. The Boilermakers have lost two of three to fall from No. 1 in the AP poll for the first time since Jan.16.
Maryland (17-8, 8-6 Big Ten) has won five of six since its first meeting with Purdue, a 58-55 loss in West Lafayette. The Terrapins have their best win of the season during the current stretch, a 66-55 home victory over Indiana on Jan. 31.

Purdue is a 1.5-point road favorite over Maryland in a series in which the Terrapins have played well against the number. Purdue is 8-5 SU but 2-9-2 ATS in the series since Maryland joined the Big Ten in 2014-15. The Boilermakers have won three of the last four, including a 58-55 home victory Jan. 2, but are 1-3 ATS in those and are 1-7 ATS since 2018. Maryland is 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS in the last three at home.
The matchup has gone under the total in the last three games and seven of the last eight. Purdue is 11-13-2 ATS, 2-5-1 on the road. Maryland has been a go-with this season, 16-9 ATS and 10-4 at home. The Terrapins are 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS in their last five Big Ten home games.
Purdue Hits a Speed Bump
Suddenly, the Boilermakers have looked vulnerable over the last two weeks, losing at Indiana and Northwestern after losing only once previously in its march to No. 1 in the AP Top 25. They committed 16 turnovers in the 79-74 loss at Indiana, when the Hoosiers shot 52.6 percent. Purdue rebounded to beat Iowa at home but fell apart down the stretch in a 64-58 loss at Northwestern on Sunday, when the Wildcats closed on on a 17-3 run in the final four minutes. The Boilers had 16 more turnovers, 13 in the second half. In those losses, they averaged one turnover every five possessions.

Northwestern joined recent Purdue opponents attacking Wooden Award favorite 7’4″ Zach Edey (22.2 points, 13.0 rebounds) on defense. The Wildcats bumped Edey as he attempted to get paint position and sent a second defender at him when he caught the ball. Not only did that send Edey to the free throw line (he was 10 of 13) and limit his shots from the field (he was 7 of 10), but it also forced him to pass out of the post to a group of not-so-great perimeters shooters. No one else provided much help, and freshman guards Fletcher Loyer (12.2 points) and Braden Smith (9.9 points, 4.4 assists) were 2 of 13 from the field and combined for five turnovers. The Boilers shot 36.2 percent from the floor.
Edey helps give the Boilers a Division I-best plus-11.7 rebound margin, but their offense remains a work in progress as opponents run at Edey.
Maryland Back in Form
After losing five of seven games in a month-long lull around the December holidays, the Terps seem to have regained their footing with victories in five of their last six games. For reference, that has come against a relatively easier portion of their schedule — four home games and road games at Minnesota and Michigan State, with the only loss coming 63-58 at Sparty on Feb. 7. Beware Maryland at home. The Terps are 13-1 at home and 7-0 in Big Ten games this season, and they stretched their home streak to 10 with a 74-68 victory over Penn State the last time out Saturday.

Charlotte transfer 6’2″ guard Jahmir Young (16.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists) is the leading scorer for a veteran, versatile group and is the primary driver of coach Kevin Willard’s pick-and-roll attack. A natural lefty, Young can use both hands off the screen and again at the rim.
Young had 18 points against the Nittany Lions, his 11th straight game in double figures, and 6’6″ guard 6’6″ Hakim Hart (11.6 points, 4.5 rebounds) had a season- and Big Ten career-high 23 points. Sophomore 6’9″ forward Julian Reese (10.6, 6.4 rebounds) and physical 6’7″ Donta Scott (12.0, 6.2) play up front. Reese, the only non-senior starter, often is used as the screener for Young.
Purdue vs Maryland Prediction
Hot Maryland meets tepid Purdue here. The Boilermakers usually win this matchup, but the Terrapins usually win the money, which makes for a intriguing proposition. Edey is always going to be the best player on the floor, but the Boilers’ inexperience in the backcourt has shown recently. Terps have plenty of talent and are monsters at home, so the points are the play here
